China's road to homegrown chip glory looks to be going for a RISC-V future - The Register

In China's quest for self-sufficient hardware supply chains, RISC-V is a leading contender because of its borderless architecture and its decentralized nature. Unlike OpenPower and other open source hardware initiatives, RISC-V isn't focused on a particular vendor. Alibaba and the Chinese Academy of Sciences are two major participants in the RISC-V ecosystem.

At this week's RISC-V Summit, the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced their new Nanhu chip, a 64-bit 14nm design that will tape out next year.

China's been scammed for billions by rogues in its chase to become a chip powerhouse, but ironically, a free, open-source CPU architecture is emerging as its best bet to create a powerful homegrown chip.

China was a winner at this week's RISC-V Summit, with many organizations introducing CPUs based on RISC-V, an open-source chip architecture sometimes called the Linux of chips. The government-backed Chinese Academy of Sciences, which is on the US Entity List, and StarFive Technology released new RISC-V chip designs for PCs and servers.

I hope that the presence of RISC-V will be a solution amidst the scarcity of processor chips under the hegemony of multinational companies. China today has shown its class as one of the technological pioneers.

This country has spent billions of dollars to make homemade chip, they are self-sufficient in technology, they have it all, china products are spread all over the world with affordable prices and good quality, that country has really made their dependence on other countries fade,
I read it, they won the chip competition this week, the government fully supports the company, and there are many other companies synergizing with them, I admit, China is really good at any technology including processor chips.

Today I first learned about RISC-V. Thanks for sharing with us. Actually Chinese electronics products are widely used in our country. Such as hardware, chips, machines etc.

China is really doing very good in technology. They can provide quality products with less cost because of huge man power. Thanks for this information.

China has always sought to boost its production capacity, in this case of chips, but its companies are not totally independent, since they depend on supplies from foreign companies. Motivated by this, the government puts pressure on the companies not to depend on other companies with respect to production, and as we can see, it is doing everything in its power to achieve it.

I am hearing about that chip for the first time. But it is more amazing to see the development of china in technology. Every invention of china these days are just staggering.

The invention of china is appreciated. I don’t know about this RISC-V chip but I think it will be very helpful for upcoming PC and that's why win it. Thank you.

I don't know much about this RISC-V chips. Basically I am hearing about this chip for the first time. But it is the reality that China products is now covering whole world, particularly in third word countries because of its low price and sustainable products.
