The quest to be decentralized can be tied to a financial crisis, but if we didn't have Bitcoin, it's likely something else to challenge centralized payment systems would have emerged.

That is correct. The difficulties in interacting with centralized systems have become major challenge and cryptocurrencies were introduced to fix this issues. Though cryptocurrencies haven't been adopted generally, but it has proven to be the solution of our present day financial systems.
