Phena Sutta
Watercolor, 2003
Emptiness mentioned in the Phena Sutta does not mean a glass empty of water. To me emptiness means this body is made of many cells, organisms that are dependent on each other for their existence. There is no inherent me found in all the dependent thingness called Red Dust. When I look at my mind I see an empty sky full of many things that come and go but I see no unchanging thing called me. When I pop that bubble labeled self all that's left is an awareness like the sun that shines down with divine indifference.
Form is like a glob of foam;
feeling, a bubble;
perception, a mirage;
fabrications, a banana tree;
consciousness, a magic trick —
this has been taught
by the Kinsman of the Sun.
However you observe them,
appropriately examine them,
they're empty, void
to whoever sees them
appropriately.
Beginning with the body
as taught by the One
with profound discernment:
when abandoned by three things
— life, warmth, & consciousness —
form is rejected, cast aside.
When bereft of these
it lies thrown away,
senseless,
a meal for others.
That's the way it goes:
it's a magic trick,
an idiot's babbling.
It's said to be
a murderer.
No substance here
is found.
Thus a monk, persistence aroused,
should view the aggregates
by day & by night,
mindful,
alert;
should discard all fetters;
should make himself
his own refuge;
should live as if
his head were on fire —
in hopes of the state
with no falling away.

@reddust, I have been following you work for some time now. This is by far my favorite!
Nothing against all of your other excellent work. This is just at a new level for me personally!
Thank you @sumatranate, this work was one of my favorites. As soon as I improve my art skills sets I will revisit this type of art that comes from my heart <3
Phena Sutta - Access to Insight.
I wonder does the butterfly has the link to that teachings.
Butterfly, because it's free and colors are balanced comparing to the balance of person's insight of surrounding world? oh well..
Thank you @yaan for your opinion, people are responsible for their behavior.

"In the Wind of the mind arises the turbulence called I. It breaks; down shower the barren thoughts." ~ AC
Sow you seeds of sweet fruit and you will have a fine harvest after the rains of spring pass.
A sweet description of:
a) A transition from essentialist to existentialist philosophy
b) Enlightenment
I haven't looked at a book on modern philosophy, like forever....modern philosophers give me a headache.
Well, I mainly stated that by what I had heard myself. I've got a bunch of friends that read it for me... ;)
I avoid arguments dealing with nihilism and eternalism because they are not relevant to my practice, I take the middle way.
Very wise. The arguments only really matter when a faction tries to use them to justify oppresion or other harms.
I avoid modern philosophy because it confuses my practice. Most of the practice has to do with letting go of clinging to what is not self...there are positive practices as well, it is dependent on a persons conditioning. But I think most people cling to their thoughts and body as self, which if you look closely there is nothing to hold onto because it is always changing. The marketing industry knows this and takes advantage of the human need to cling to an image of themselves that is only a label, or someone builds a view of self based on a societies view, the marketing industry uses this need to have an unchanging self to sell people all kinds of stuff and ideologies like plastic surgery, useless fashion, you know all sorts of stuff. The reason I like this sutta is it helps me let go of my changing body and mind and let it be...that does not mean I don't take baths and wear clothing lololol
If I remember existentialism it does not deal with Buddha Nature, what has the potential, since there is no becoming really. Which cannot be known by the intellect only through insight. And to do that one must let go of all concepts of self.

Wow, Nice art. Those bubbles made this art even better. Nice colour dynamics. Loved it :)
Thank you @luja, I've loved painting bubbles forever and when I read the sutta I saw my thoughts fly around like a butterfly made of foam....
