Venom is simply an enjoyable comic book movie. Despite the fact that most critics hate this movie, fans have rallied around the movie and supported it. Lady Gaga fans not included, they bash the movie endlessly in the hopes that A Star is Born will claim the number 1 spot at the box office. That will no longer happen as Venom has proven to have a healthy hold at the box office. There is no outrageous second weekend drop. Venom also has a B+ Cinema Score and on Rotten Tomatoes you can see that the critics score of 31% is sharply contrasted by the 88% of audiences who like the movie.

I am one of those 88%, I really liked the movie. I went to see it with friends after a really long day, I was awake for about 18 hours and I was half asleep by the time I got to my seat at the cinema. But, the movie was fun, entertaining, engaging, and I forgot about my sleep deprivation until I got home.

In the movie Tom Hardy plays Eddie Brock, an edgy reporter who is always after the truth. He is given a job to interview Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed), a rich entrepreneur, with a shady reputation. Obviously, things do not go according to plan.

I love Tom Hardy, I went to see this movie simply because he is in it. And for once we can see his face and hear his voice. This is a movie that all Tom Hardy fans will love, his acting is superb as he carries this entire movie on his shoulders. Plus, with the character of venom, it’s as if you get double Tom Hardy. His interactions with Venom are the best part of the movie.

I think Riz Ahmed doesn’t have what it takes to be a villain, he did an ok job, but after Thanos my bar is set really high. Michelle Williams as Anne Weying and the love interest of the movie was pretty bad. She chooses to put on a really annoying voice (she does not sound like this in real life) and it bugged me to no end every time she talked. Also, she doesn’t have any chemistry with Tom Hardy in my opinion. Though her character did have some great moments, as a love interest she just didn’t work. Jenny Slate did manage to shine in a small role as Dr. Dora Skirth.

The bottom line is that Venom is a really fun movie. I know a lot of fans are angry that Spider-Man is not in the movie, but I think that the movie made it work anyway. The plot was decent with regular comic book movie plot holes. The action was pretty awesome, although someone should have turned on the light in the movie for the last battle, because I could barley see what was happening. The movie had a 90s vibe. It took itself really seriously and yet it had a lot of comedic moments. It was just a fan time at the movies.

Also stay in the theater for those post-credit scenes.

I give it a 7.5/10
