British ex-army officer ED Stafford

began the trip of his life in April 2008, when he set out to walk the entire length of the Amazon River in South America, from its source to the Atlantic Ocean.

He hopes to become the first man ever to do this and to highlight rainforest deforestation in the process. The river is 4000 MI long, but ED thinks he will have walked almost 6000 Mi by the time he is finished because the river is so wide and deep in so many places that he can’t always take the shortest route. By February 2010, ED had passed the halfway point of his 4000 MI trek, accompanied by a local guide, CHO, and with much of his “Walk” spent chest deep in murky water.

Hiking through one of the wildest environments on earth, ED has faced venomous snakes, flooding, electric eels, piranhas and Jaguars. He has been pursued by armed Peruvian tribes people and been wrongly arrested on suspicion of murder. Traveling light with only a backpack, he is also at risk of scurvy or even starvation, often forced to forage in the jungle and catch piranhas for breakfast.
