TIP$, WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT THIS

in #life9 years ago

You do understand that they make $2.13 an hour. Their  wages depend on you.

So with that being said, let's talk about the issue of low tips or the lack of  tip at all.

First of all, if your food isn't right, it's not your waiter or waitress fault, it is the cooks fault, so don't take out  on them.

Second, you have to understand that they are there to serve you, if they don't do that well, then tip accordingly. But you have to separate the issue from them, if the issue is out of their controll, then it's not their fault.

My wife and I went out to lunch today and the family sitting across from us had some issues with their food not being right. So the manager came by and made it right for them, yet when they get ready to leave the guy pulls one dollar out of his wallet for the tip, now come on, one dollar. The waitress was doing a good job, their issue was with the food and they took it out on the waitress.

My problem here is this. One, we have to stop being so close minded about things, and most importantly we have to stop being so cheap. If you can afford to go out to eat, you should be able to afford a decent tip..

Now I am sure that we can talk all night about what is a decent tip. But I try to do half, untill it is not reasonable

So my challenge to every steemian, if it is the waitress fault then take it out on them, but if it isn't their fault, then take care of them, and tip the well, and if you can't afford to do that, then don't go out to eat.

I'm totally with you here. Whenever we go out to a sit down restaurant, we always tip 20% and move up from there. However, I would love to see restaurants here like they are in Europe... You know, where the employer actually pays their employees a living wage... Nope, push it onto the customer to do that.. It's really the only job where people don't make at least minimum wage (at least that I can think of). This is why I don't go out to eat more than once a month, and I think it's why fast food restaurants have popped up everywhere... People don't want to have to pay 20% of their food bill to someone to bring them their food. The restaurant industry is failing due to this.

Agree, but what we have is what we have
I live in a city that is over run with restaurants and unfortunately for the 18 to 20 year olds that might be going to school, this is what they have to choose from. I agree that its wrong, however we know this before we walk into that restaurant. Thanks for the visit my friend.

Some people don't know, but generally the receipts put the gratuity tax on there so yeah everyone should know.

I thought of this when I read your post.

The restaurants should have to pay minimum wage to their employees, it is a fraud. No service should involve a tip in my opinion, the employer should pay the employee. I do tip of course, just saying it is wrong.

Agree, but untill it changes, it is what it is. My point was if the service is good tip the service, if the food sucks then dont pay for the food. Thanks for the comment and visit.

What's fraudulent about the wage restaurants that pay their employees such a low wage? The employee has entered a contract voluntarily to work for agreed wage and is free to find employment elsewhere. I could make a very strong case that the governmental body that intervenes in the free market and would raise minimum wage is the fraudulent one, but that is another issue entirely. I don't disagree that $2/hr is not a living wage, but there is no violent transgression taking place and therefore no real injustice. Waitstaff agreed and voluntarily entered into employment at said establishment. That is something you should remember ✌️

In my opinion the employer should pay the employee a living wage, you should not have to guess how much someone is earning and feel obliged to give them handouts. Many people do not have a choice, they take what they can get when it comes to employment.

I won't take it out on the waiter if the food is not good but if the service is not good I will tip less. I just hate poor service.

In all honesty I have no idea what the waitress at the local establishment earns. She may be getting $10/hr and plus the tips. I'm a big tipper if the service is great and I will even tip at a takeout place where I get treated well. If the service is shit I'll destroy the staff responsible. I don't let shitty service slide, particularly as I worked in customer service myself before.

Great, if its good then tip, if it isnt then dont. Thanks for the comment and visit.

Good article, touchy subject at times. Here in NZ we don't tip - its quite uncommon.

Tipping Factoid: "The general rule of thumb (for me) is to round the bill up to the nearest $10, and leave 20%. This is easy to calculate, and it rewards servers for good service. I know many people claim 15% is adequate, but keep in mind that your server is making just over $2 an hour without tips to run him- or herself ragged"

Ray, this is a very reasonable point of view you have and I appreciate it. I consider myself also to be reasonable and able to separate different issues from eachother, but I do always keep one thing at the back of my mind... Tipping is 100% voluntary. There are so many that make absolutist statements that "one must tip" and although I think that they are coming from a good place, we have to remember one thing. Our waitstaff friends have voluntarily agreed to work for their hourly pay.

The contradiction I see is this...

If some people have such moral objections to the wage earned by waitstaff, why do they insist that we have to subsidize the exploitive owners of the establishment by us paying their employees. Lol

I'll gladly reward good service but it's just a point that I figured I'd bring up!

Have good one brother! ✌️

I get it, and appreciate your comment, however, I do believe that there is a mindset in the USA that it is accecptable, maybe this is just what we are accustomed to. Maybe the wage and hour board should step in, but untill then I think we are stuck with what we have, my point is that we need to reward good service, kinda just like steemit. Thanks for your comment, appreciate your out look.

I agree man, it's not fair to take it out in the waitstaff for problems with the food. The waitstaff wage in Canada is not that low, that's terrible to hear the hourly wage is just over $2/hr. I try to leave a generous tip when I'm out, it's usually better on the small bills like you have done. I do find it a bit hard to leave a full 20% when the bill is up over $100, but you make a good point if you can afford the meal you should aslo be able to afford the tip.

Whattttttttttt $10 in a tip awful man yes the tip have to be just if you want

Thanks for the visit.
