Are dollar stores worth the money?

in #money7 years ago (edited)

So tonight we needed paper towels, so my wife asked me to run to wal-mart and pick some up. Well dollar tree sits right across the road from wal-mart. Seeing is how I hate wal-mart, dollar tree it is.

So I go in and the first thing I see is a sign that says everything is $1.00 . Thought to my self okay so they will be cheap paper towels, it will be okay just cleaning windows with them.

So after I walked every ailse and step over everything that was on the floor, I found the paper towels. They actually looked like a used half roll of paper towels but they where still sealed up so I threw them in the buggy .

As I head to the front regisiter to check out I noticed the candy ailse. Seeing as how I have a sweet tooth why not? Then I noticed that the candy bags and packs seem smaller.

Then it hit me this was not a bargin store, this was a package is smaller than everyone else store. No real value her just smaller packaging.

So when I get home I go straight to the computer to pull up dollar tree financial reports.

Would you belive that in america retail sales are down and profits of retail store are down, infact they are at a 16 month low right know.

Well not dollar tree. Here are there stats

sales increased for the 1st quarter by 5%
Earning rose 40.2% to 1.36 versus 0.97 from the previous year per share.

These dollar stores have the biggest gimic going on in history they make you think you are getting a bargin when all you are really getting is smaller packages.

Let me know your thoughts.

It all depends.

We don't have the dollar stores where I live.

Where do you live?

dollar stores are def worth it. they have alot for only a dollar. i shop at dollar stores every week to get paper towels, paper plates and everyday shit i need.

Thanks for the comment. I am just trying to figure out is it cheaper or it is given the illusion it is cheaper.

There is a lot of shit worth getting form dollar store, as for the packaging thati do know for a fact a lot is smaller packaged then normal retail. Now the CRAP things they sell at most dollar stores is not worth even the $1.

Thanks for the comment @skylineking88

There are very few places that I HAVE NOT WORKED. I worked at the dollar store. Consider it a convenience market. It's a retail illusion. In order to find the best deals you have to be frugal and cross reverence because there are deals to find everywhere including the dollar store.

Thanks for your comment @xtrodinarypilot , I have had alot of retail jobs as well, never st the dollar tree but still retail. I just know what the margins are for retail and there isnr much play room in those margins.

As with anything you need to pay attention to prices. They have three way incandescent blubs for $1. 4 packs of 100 watt, 130v (last longer) blubs. I don't buy paper towels at a dollar store. But I do buy 2.5 gallon ziplocks that I cannot find at the larger stores, also a $1.

Thanks for the comment my friend. I guess there would be value in it if they only carried the item. But from what I see about 80% of there items are not the best value you can find.

That could very well be true. I don't shop there other than specific items. Yes occasionally go for the sweets for $1 for a 3 ounce bag. Grocery store bag would be 12 or 16 ounces but it would still be 3 or $4 and I don't need all those sweets !
