I have covered 54000 KM in 3 years on my P220. I covered the first 10k in 3 months itself. So riding long distances is possible and it is fun. But you will be tired at end of the day. A long ride will calm you and change your perspective.

I went on a ride last december it was 5 days long I covered 2000 km(approx) and by the 5th day my butt was so sore I could not sit on the sofa even.

The most important thing about going on a ride for a beginner is figuring out what type of a rider you are.
Whether a direct highway guy or a corner loving junkie. Since that makes choosing the routes and destination real easy.

Some important things you should do when planing for a ride or going on one are.

  1. Get good safety gear, a jacket makes a lot of difference to your ride quality since it insulates you from wind buffeting and provides a nice sense of security... Always wear a Full face helmet , do not go for the motocross helmets, they look good but a lot of wind goes inside and hence they are very tiring on long rides.

  2. Get some saddlebags. Carrying a bag even when supported by the rear seat will be tiring if done for 5 hours continously.

  3. Plan ahead and try not to ride in the nights since in night the highways are extremely dark and oncoming vehicles might blind you due to their high beams.

  4. Take breaks, keep yourself hydrated and cool down the bike , preferably every 1 -2 hours.

  5. Don't just go for on a long(> 400 km in a day) ride.
pace your self , go on shorter rides first , then gradually move to longer rides.

  6. Get a basic idea of how you bike runs and try to learn simple repairing procedures like repairing a puncture, lubing chain etc.

For a beginner rider these will be enough. As you ride more you will get more insight and you wont need all these pointers.
