Wildlife : Birdwatching - 673

The black kite (Milvus migrans)
Last year, these guys appeared in our city on April 4. It is worth saying that these birds live here even in the city, and not just in the forests and on the outskirts. I was very surprised when I moved to Siberia in 1997 and for the first time I saw a predator hovering over yards. At first I even thought that they were tame and live at someone’s house, but for the locals it is quite customary to see them flying over the city.
So, on April 4th I went to the forest and saw them. They circled over the cemetery. They looked for prey, namely forest mice. At the same time as hunting, they build nests. And in the summer, their nests are very difficult to detect, even despite their large size. And only in the autumn, when the leaves fall and expose the trees, you can see the nests on the tops of tall trees.
