Remembrance of Earth's Past, Liu Cixin. First Editions.
Liu Cixin (born 1963) is a Chinese science fiction writer. He's very well-regarded, winning China's most prestigious literary scifi award The Galaxy Award nine times! He was also the first Asian to win the Hugo Award for Best Novel. He won it his novel The Three-Body Problem, originally serialized in Science Fiction World in 2006, published in book form in 2008 and received an english translation in 2014. It's the first volume in a trilogy, commonly referred to as Remembrance of Earth's Past, and includes The Dark Forest and Death's End. Set against the backdrop of the Cultural Revolution, the plot involves a secret military project that sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. Lo and behold, an alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. The result is a science fiction masterpiece that Kirkus Reviews called "remarkable, revelatory and not to be missed." Even former US president Barack Obama is a fan, saying "the scope of it was immense. So that was fun to read, partly because my day-to-day problems with Congress seem fairly petty".
