Real Madrid head to La Liga title with win against Getafe

in #real2 years ago

Buoyed by their Champions League victory over Chelsea on Wednesday, Real Madrid returned to domestic action against Getafe, and continued their march towards the LaLiga Santander title with a 2-0 victory.

Carlo Ancelotti's side have been in a strong position in the league for much of the campaign, yet are now counting down the days until they officially win back the domestic title, which could happen as early as their next match against Sevilla.

Federico Valverde was rewarded for his excellent performance against Chelsea in midweek with another start by Ancelotti, but it was his midfield partner, Casemiro, who was the unlikely goalscorer after 38 minutes.

Vinicius Jr provided a perfect cross to his fellow Brazilian, who nodded the ball into the empty net, scoring his first goal of the 2021/22 season.

There wasn't to be the quick rush of goals that came at Stamford Bridge for Los Blancos, with Karim Benzema missing half-chances either side of the break, however Getafe were never really much of a threat.

The game was over in the 68th minute when Lucas Vazquez added to the host's tally, powering the ball into the bottom left corner of the net after some nice interplay with Rodrygo.

Gareth Bale made his return to the Bernabeu, coming on for Benzema with 15 minutes to go, and received a hostile reception from the home faithful.

Getafe almost pulled a goal back in injury-time, with Enes Unal controlling a pass on the edge of the penalty area, before firing a shot directly into the post, allowing Los Blancos a routine end to their evening.

Real Madrid look to take another step towards the LaLiga Santander title on Saturday night when they host Getafe at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. Los Blancos are in high spirits after their back to back wins over Celta Vigo and Chelsea, while Getafe managed to end their six-match winless run with a victory over Mallorca. Real Madrid vs Getafe FULL TIME: 2-0
This is the very beginning of our Real Madrid vs Getafe live blog, as we bring you all the updates from this Saturday night meeting at the Bernabeu.

FULL TIME
Real Madrid pick up a comfortable three points against Getafe, through goals from Casemiro and Vazquez.

Minute 90+1: Unal hits the post
Getafe have their best chance of the game in injury time, as Unal hits the post.

Minute 89: Bale has a shot... and is applauded
The ball bounces up invitingly for Bale who decides to take on a speculative strike from distance. It's comfortably gathered by Soria, but the effort is surprisingly applauded.

Minute 74: Bale comes on to whistles
Bale comes on to replace Benzema, and is greeted with loud whistles from the Bernabeu.

Minute 68: GOAL - REAL MADRID
It's been coming and Real Madrid finally have a two-goal cushion. Lucas Vazquez combines well with Rodrygo before the Spaniard places the ball with composure into the far corner. You'd have to imagine it's game over now.

Minute 65: Valverde almost scores from distance
Valverde fires a freekick towards goal from all of 30 yards and the Uruguayan only narrowly misses the far corner. Soria looked beaten.

Minute 57: Marcelo hits the post
Marcelo strides forward, as he has been doing all game, and fires a strike towards goal. The ball crashes against the post.

Minute 46: Second half begins
The second half is underway at the Bernabeu.

HALF TIME
Real Madrid lead at the break through Casemiro's header. Los Blancos have been in control throughout, although they will be looking to grab a second as quickly as possible to secure the points.

Minute 44: Casemiro to miss Sevilla clash
Casemiro picks up a yellow card for dissent, which rules him out of the top of the table clash against Sevilla next week.

Minute 42: Marcelo goes close
Marcelo has been active in attack for Real Madrid, and he came close to scoring. The Brazilian unleashed a shot from outside the box and, via a deflection, went just wide. From the resulting corner, Benzema heads over.

Minute 38: GOAL - REAL MADRID
Casemiro heads Real Madrid into the lead, connecting with a phenomenal cross from Vinicius, who delivered the ball into the box with the outside of his boot. It was an assist Luka Modric would've been proud of. A deserved lead for the hosts.

Minute 34: Camavinga shoots from distance
Short of options, Camavinga has an effort from distance but it goes way over the bar, much to the displeasure of the Bernabeu faithful.

Minute 30: Getafe enter the game
At the half-hour mark, the visitors have finally started to get on the ball and cause Real Madrid a few problems. Enes Unal has been at the heart of anything positive from Getafe.

Minute 19: Valverde denied
Valverde connects with a volley as he peels off the back stick which bounces off the ground en route to goal, but Soria makes a smart stop.

Minute 14: Vazquez goes close
Vazquez cuts inside from the right onto his left foot and has an effort towards goal, but it goes just wide of the post.

Minute 4: Goal for Real Madrid... but it's ruled out
Benzema slots past Soria, but the goal is ruled out for offside. The Frenchman was offside in both phases of the attack.

KICK OFF
We're underway at the Bernabeu.

18:45 BST: Getafe's confirmed XI
Former Real Madrid player Borja Mayoral starts up front, while ex-Barcelona midfielder Carles Alena features for Getafe at the Bernabeu.

Getafe's starting XI: Soria, Damian, Djene, Mitrovic, Cuenca, Olivera, Maksimovic. Alena, Villar, Mayoral, Unal

18:15 BST: Real Madrid's confirmed XI
Ancelotti is at it again with his early starting XI announcement. The Italian clearly has an eye on the return leg with Chelsea, as Modric, Kroos and Carvajal drop to the bench. Camavinga gets a rare start, as do Lucas Vazquez and Rodrygo.

18:00 BST: Make Bernabeu a fortress again
Real Madrid lost to Barcelona in their last home match, in what was their first LaLiga Santander defeat at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu since January 2021 (against Levante). Now, Carlo Ancelotti will be looking to respond with a win against Getafe and begin another long unbeaten streak.

Real Madrid's predicted line-up
Eder Militao is fit to play despite suffering a knock against Chelsea, but given that he is suspended for the reverse fixture on Tuesday, Nacho Fernandez could come into the side. Eden Hazard, Isco and Luka Jovic are all unavailable through injury.

Real Madrid's predicted line-up (4-3-3): Thibaut Courtois; Dani Carvajal, Nacho Fernandez, David Alaba, Ferland Mendy; Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Luka Modric; Marco Asensio, Karim Benzema, Vinicius Junior.

Gareth Bale, Real Madrid and coach Carlo Ancelotti are in agreement that the Welshman deserves the kind of sendoff that his contributions to the club have merited.

The Welshman is expected to part ways with Los Blancos in the summer as his contract comes to an end, nine years after departing Tottenham to join Real Madrid.

"You have to end your career at Real Madrid by doing something big," his mother and other relatives have repeatedly told Bale.

Ancelotti brought him on in the last few minutes of the game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, giving him that opportunity over a month after his last outing at the Parc des Princes against Paris Saint-Germain on February 15.

Then, in the press conference prior the game against Getafe, the Italian coach explicitly stated that he believes Bale deserves a good farewell at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, where he has not featured since February 26, 2020, in the game with Manchester City.

Bale remains happy in Madrid

Contrary to popular belief, Bale and his family are happy in Madrid. The Welshman has never had any problems in his daily life in the Spanish capital, with the rest of his family even staying in Madrid when he was on loan at Spurs.

"Gareth is happy in Madrid," his agent, Jonathan Barnett, told Deportes Cuatro this week.

"He loves the city and the club. If he had received a little love, everything would have been different."

Starter, injured and substitute

Bale was considered a starter in the first three LaLiga Santander games of this season. Then, he joined up with his national team and picked up an injury which sidelined him for the next 14 games.

He recovered from injury for the game against Atletico Madrid, but didn't feature. Then, he contracted COVID-19 before suffering from a back issue.

Bale started against Villarreal and played five minutes in Paris, but he couldn't feature in the Copa del Rey against Alcoyano due to injury. He also missed the Supercopa de Espana and didn't participate in any Champions League group stage fixtures through injuries.

It has, therefore, been a mixed season for Bale, but he'll hope to end it on a high with a LaLiga Santander title and a final outing at the Bernabeu.
