Preparation for Another Cow to Go to Freezer Camp.

in #homesteading7 years ago

Well it is that time of the year when one of the cows goes to freezer camp. We have several friends coming over @mericanhomestead, @beatitudes8, and his son Tim, and @papa-pepper.

As we set up I thought that I would share with you how we got ready. This week has defiantly been the coldest week this winter, when I woke up this morning it was about -5F with the wind chill and it didn't even get out of the teens this afternoon. We started by building a fire out in the shop to keep us warm as we are cutting up the meat. It probably wont get above 45F in there so there is no chance of the meat going bad as we are cutting it up.

After building the fire we had to set up the table to cut meat on. Since we only have one table for butchering we use a big storage bin with stainless steel on top of it. This table is not only great for cutting the meat it is also the perfect size for mixing our sausage on.

We also had to sharpen the knives for processing the meat. Here is a video on how to sharpen a knife with a cardboard grinding wheel.

Besides cleaning the coolers and the tabletop we were done in the garage so it was time to move outside. We started off by hanging our two ton block and tackle up on an old heavy duty storage rack for pallets. The block and tackle is always a pain to get up on top since it weighs over 100 pounds and we have to get it nearly twenty feet in the air.

Here is outside table next to the hanging station. This is mostly used in the fall when the sheep go to freezer camp.

The only thing left is to get out trash bags and plastic gloves. I will do another post after the cow is done.

I really like your lambs here too! Glad I could help with the chores!

Glad you were able to come down and help.

Good luck! That is a huge job!
Fresh beef is delicious!

Thank you. The fresh beef is awesome.

Looks like you guys do it the right way. You have a great set up. We butcher our own cattle as well but we do not have that nice of hanging system. Good luck and have fun
