Make sure the lines for your wood texture are NOT parallel.

In addition, draw the lines with different levels of thickness.

Pay attention to the brightness values of each area.

To draw holes and cracks, imagine which part of the hole is the deepest.
The deepest part is the darkest.
Then, draw a gradual transition in brightness values in the opposite direction.

Do the same for cracks.

If you have some knowledge in perspective drawing, you can draw objects from imagination (birdhouse from imagination, bird from observation):

I tend to draw many cracks and holes when drawing wood, because it is fun.

Drawing, in my opinion, is great to master. After that, it is much easier with colors.
