Short Transitions Drawing Guide - Ran Art Blog

Transitions (in brightness values) exist everywhere.

In the next example, I used transition from dark to light, to create depth.

Here, I did the opposite, and drew a transition from light to dark, to create depth.

An area that has the same value, looks flat and unnatural, compared to an area with transitions in values.

Every part of a drawing should (usually) have transitions.

In the next sketch, look at the transitions of values in the sofa. There is no continuous area with the same value.

Pay attention to the dark indents (sunken areas) in this old sketch of a seashell. They are dark, but gradually getting lighter toward the left side.

Sometimes, the transitions in a flat area are subtle, yet they exist, both on the object and in the shadows.
In the next oil painting, the values toward the ground are darker.

So, remember, stay away from flat.

Instead, sketch a cat.

Or, a hat.
