Day 22 Update on our Easter Egger Hatch
Yesterday was a great start for our 21st day in this hatching cycle. We had 5 chicks emerge from their shells yesterday, and we went to bed with some starting to get close. This morning we added another 4 chicks to our brooder. We have 6 more eggs left to go.
These chicks are a cross between a rhode island red rooster and an ameraucana hen. They will retain the blue egg laying gene of their mother's breed, and gain the hardiness and reliability of the father's.
These chicks will be trained to forage and be self reliant unlike most store bought chicks. I only sell chicks after 3 weeks of age to make sure they have become acclimated to an outdoor environment. My sister and I kept ducks and chickens when we lived in Maryland (Lutherville). A giant female fox who frequented our yard day and night got at least three of them. Our Norwegian Duck tried to save them, but the fox was too crafty. He was a brave duck and scared of nothing. He used to play with the dogs in the back yard.
I was very angry because the one hen we had thought she was a parrot and would always love to sit on my shoulder. She, the hen, was also our best layer as well.
