Tomato is a kind of salad vegetable full of nutritional value. It is also one of the best sources of Vitamin A and Vitamin C. It also contains a type of vitamin called beta carotene which protects against night blindness. Also contains carbs, sugars, minerals and other essential nutrients. Tomatoes, rich in medicinal properties, have anti-cancer properties. Eating one tomato a day reduces the risk of cancer by 60%.
Seedbed preparation time:
The best time for sowing in the seedbed is from 2nd to 3rd week of Kartik (last week of October to first week of November) for winter tomato cultivation.
Time of planting and cultivation method:
Tomato can be cultivated in almost all types of soil. However, sandy loam soil is most suitable. From last week of Kartik to first week of Agrahayan (last week of November to first week of December) is the best time to plant seedlings. However, seedlings can be planted for 20-25 days till the middle of agrahayan. When the cultivation of the land is completed, a bed 10-15 cm high should be made from the ground and drain should be arranged around the bed. Water the seedlings immediately after planting. The distance from row to row will be 50 cm and the distance from seedling to seedling will be 50 cm.
Irrigation:
When cultivating in dry season, water irrigation is required. Irrigation can be given three times depending on the condition of the crop and soil.
Care:
Understand the condition of the land and lightly water the tree with a shower. If weeds appear after planting, the soil should be loosened with a hoe and the weeds should be lightly cleared. Tomatoes need to be planted to get good yield and perfect fruit. The yield of tomatoes is increased by making ‘A’ shaped bamboo frame between the two rows. Extra stalks should be pruned if necessary so that the tree is not overgrown. Before applying the fertilizer in the first and second installment, the sidekushi should be pruned. This reduces the attack of insects and diseases and increases the size and weight of the fruit. The land should be kept weed free with weeds.
Harvesting and Yield:
Collection of ripe tomatoes can be started within 60 to 90 days of planting depending on the variety. Tomatoes can be harvested both ripe and raw. Tomatoes can be collected seven to eight times from each tree. If there is a slight redness on the underside of the fruit, it is suitable for harvesting. Depending on the variety, the yield of tomato can be 80 to 100 kg per cent.
