My 24/7 Boinc Rig
Hello everyone,
I thought I'd share one of my boinc rig. This is my 24/7 boinc rig, I also boinc on my gaming/work PC in my off time.
The thing is in the basement which is nice because the 7990 alone sounds like a jet engine taking off when it's hot. This provides most of my heating in the winter.
Specs
- I7 920 @4ghz
- 12gb DDR3 1333 ram
- 300mb (lol)+1tb HDD
- XFX RX 480 8 GB hot-swappable fans
- MSI HD 7990
- R9 270x (new passive design! hah).
The story behind the rig
The CPU, Ram and mobo all come from my old gaming rig from back in 2008-2009? There's nothing interesting there however, here comes the GPUs. the 7990 I bought in 2013 and had it in my gaming rig, doing some overnight mining on litecoin and then dogecoin when litecoin mining died. VRM blew out on the thing so I RMA'd it (yeah, I was that guy), got a new one AFAICT and I started doing boinc after learning about gridcoin (was around 2015-2016).
Then I got an RX 480 (tired of poor crossfire support), the aforementioned XFX one, turns out it's kinda like a Nano in size and it runs hot AF which means the fans are noisy and that just wasnt going to cut it for my gaming rig so I put it in my mining rig and got a MSI rx 480 Gaming X instead, great card and I'm still using it.
The R9 270x. So I was browsing kijiji and there was this gpu with a cracked shroud and broken fans, dude was asking $15 for it so I took it. It still works it just overheated under use. So I put it on a riser in my mining rig just over that 220mm fan and turned the clocks down a notch and it works great for boinc.
and then we come to the hard drives, I'm running Burstcoin mining on them even if I barely get anything from it, I strongly belive in not wasting hardware and since I'm not using them anymore, I might as well. I sure wish there was a storage-based boinc project tho!

That metal grid up there looks like a grill :)
Nice rig and the attached story give it a lot of interrest ! I will make mine soon, when the last card is on ! Keep it crunching !
Nice rig, very industrial :)
That's an interesting fan above the 7990
If you could somehow put your GPU on the other side of the grill then you could make some BBQ at home :D Think about it, you will be the first person in the world with PC which contributes to science and can host a BBQ party!
Every Boinc Rig is a good rig :)
