The Barney was commissioned in 1962 in what was then a large naval shipyard on the Delaware River in Philadelphia. During the next thirty years or so, both the ship and the shipyard were busy protecting democracy from communism and other things. In 1995, however, the ship was closed and the Navy's yard was partially closed, partially delivered to a private shipbuilding company, and mainly reserved as a Naval Maintenance Facility for Inactive Vessels, to build old ships.
