The repeated opinions about woodpeckers that they only cater to tapping the bark of trees are not entirely true. The green or gray-gray woodpecker obtains its food mainly from the bottom . Ants are his delicacy, but he won't disdain small worms or earthworms.

The Picus viridis is a medium-sized bird. The length of the body doesn't exceed 30 cm and the wingspan is about 45 cm. Its characteristic feature is coloration. Green wings with spots and a light-weight green body. The males even have a red red cap on their heads, the so-called "mohawk ".

The Picus viridis feeds primarily on the ground, and its main food is ants. However, he won't despise food of plant origin, he eats, for instance , rowan fruits or hazelnuts.

The incubation of eggs takes about 18 days and is attended by male and feminine . After about 3 weeks, the birds are able to fly, but don't leave their parents too quickly.
