RE: The Role of Markets and State

in #economics7 years ago (edited)

Profits are the sole driver for innovation, a basis of the free market if you may, thereby leading to the best possible allocation of a resources.
What do you mean when you say morals? There is no single form of Morality. All actions termed as 'good' or 'bad' are with respect to a moral frame of reference. Therefore, its as 'morally right' to exploit resources for one's survival, than to preserve it for others.
This is an evolutionary trait instilled in the human psyche to act selfish, because this has resulted in our species surviving.
So its primarily the governments job to establish a sense of morality which is highly egalitarian and utilizes resources in a way not dictated by the free market alone, but also taking into consideration the inherent disadvantage certain sections of the society find themselves in and focus on equity as opposed to equality.
And banks are just institutions run BY PEOPLE. They dont have an existence of their own. The mere notion of 'bailing out' is inherent if the institution has to survive. As a matter of fact, in every legal document the trustee obliges that the withdrawal of the funds he/she deposits is based on a promise which the bank makes to give the funds back. But the banks dont neccessarily have to. Most people dont seem to know this at all.
The reason why most people fall prey to such schemes is because they dont seem to understand the specific details which a bank mentions in its terms and conditions. The bank is not for the benefit of the people, but for its stakeholders.

Sort:

sorry, but I've made up my mind some actions are worthy of praise and I decide who to give it to. That is morals for me, thinking for yourself and doing what is best.

I'm leaving that in the government's hands and taking it as a fact that I'm selfish, I'm no shellfish :D China has a government running the show, guess what their elders are dead their bees are gone and their air is shit.

Don't bring in laws and regulations and terms of service I've read some "we decide what to do with you if you come to us" sure. Ok fair point after all I know what you mean it is how it is after all. I agree with you, but I disagree with the morality being inherently selfish, that is born from the lack of validation, or lack of "returns" on your wishes, It's a fools game to go down that rabbit hole and stay a child thinking the world needs to give you something, or that you have to take to survive, sometimes it falls on your lap because there is enough to go around, since everyone is contribution, we don't live there :D

Good call after all :)

Well I dont mean to be harsh on you. But the sense of morality that you deem yourself to, is not universally applicable. The notion that I put forth is not unique to the human species, rather its found across all life on Earth. Selfishness is inherent, though the extent to which is quite debatable.
In the case of the Chinese government that you mention, the economic policies during the 1990's were geared towards a massive economic growth rate which led to bubbles forming in pretty much all sectors of the economy (One of the widely used examples is the presence of ghost cites across China). This sought of exploitation led to massive environmental damage which has been becoming quite apparent lately. The mistake the Chinese government has made is that of unsustainability. The growth was primarily focused on the economic growth and not that of economic development. Therefore, despite China's economic progress, the standard of living for a large majority of people is still quite mediocre.
Laws and Regulations are the governmental representations of morality and ethics. Therefore their inclusion is quite vital to the topic under consideration. Since we dont live in a Utopian world, the government has some major flaws. One of these flaws is Corruption. This has resulted in the manipulation of the laws and regulations of a country to favor those who are already in positions of wealth and power. Therefore, without introducing a sense of equity and egalitarianism into the picture, the people at the bottom of this system will never be able to rise at a level where they wont have the perpetual fear of 'getting run over'. This is precisely why governments introduce subsidies, unemployment benefits, food stamps and so on. Otherwise, these people would seize to exist. Now you could ask why do they even have to exist if they are not contributing to this system? The answer of which lies in the moral values which the society has been built upon and what the society has evolved into. This is the moral frame of reference that changes us from purely an animal into something beyond.

well put :) there was something about universal morality, but I'm not going to indulge in that right now, sorry, well said with everything :)

It's a quick read. I mean watch the read is not that much

Thank You :)
Well I'm a Moral Relativist (with a little bit of nihilism sprinkled on top), so my views on Universal Morality or Objective Morality would be quite distinct from your own. But thats another discussion on its own.

Another aspect I'd like to voice my concern about is the structure of the STEEM blockchain which is quite disincentivizing to new members, as its increasingly harder for them to increase their reputation. This in turn determines how many people see their post, and what their post payouts might be. The article completely misses this point which wouldn't hold all that good among a lot of people.

Well I'm a Moral Relativist (with a little bit of nihilism sprinkled on top),

You killed me right there, how could you :D

Another aspect I'd like to voice my concern about is the structure of the STEEM blockchain which is quite disincentivizing to new members, as its increasingly harder for them to increase their reputation.

The strongest survive, in all honesty there is a bit of that, but it's all votes after all, the more you have the more you offer the more you get voted on. The better it is the more people find it the whales might vote on you if they see fit and bam you are at ~60 could happen in a day, but yes it's hard trying to climb a ladder when everybody is already at the top, at least it would be tough to compete with someone that was here 5 months ago and made 15k for a post :D we can spend a year doing just that right now, so yeah I guess relativism is a good place to start :D

But seriously, don't be relativistic, good is good, the logic goes like this, I do what I can to make myself better, what makes me feel better also benefits my family, what has benefited my family can benefit the community, what has benefited the community can benefit the world. Or along those lines in a nutshell.

Still I see your point that there are many people cultures and have different values and actions they deem worthy.

I have posts where I get a lot of upvotes, but all the votes are meaningless if they are all minnows and bots. The payout is still quite disincentivizing. Thats one of the reasons I stopped writing articles, only for them to be completely ignored.
You contradict yourself when you state "Don't be Relativistic", as the mere notion of doing whats best for you (or your loved ones) is a relativistic act. Since most of what you find 'right' or 'good' is just subjective interpretation

Just saw you were quite new, so far you are doing well, I would suggest spending more time writing and forging a story, more images and facts data and all and less videos :D tat is a valid way to go about it, or go contribute early to the big topics of te day as a good curator or to the big people that give out good content, that way your exposure will increase and more people will be interested in your stories, :) Cheers from me, if you have questions feel free :) to ask of course :)

The platform is steered in a direction where the majority of people like. So my earlier posts in Philosophy hardly got any attention. But it turns out, posting about utter trivialities or praising this platform, are the best shot for any sort of decent payout. Since the rewards are the differentiating factor between Steemit and other social networks, it sort of becomes pointless if the platform is heavily biased towards certain predispositions.

I agree with both your points still one would fall under the evolution category and coupled with the market principle you would have what's best win out and distributed with a lower cost to more people.

On the second point for the platform, jut expand your network I'm making a daily curation round from time to time tat earns me 30 cents :D pathetic really, but I'm learning more and more and that is worth any payout. Reading a 0.00 post that has meaning and value is better than a 20$ trending video with 5 views on the post treated like a stock on the "market" people are always stupid and that's why I'm saying the platform need fixing and a direction, based on growth and principles and not instagram INSTANT GRATIFICATION, the problem is it's even in the whitepaper people have said it countless times and still nobody reads or takes their time to think for a second.

Anyways I was going to nominate your post in the Steemit Voter Guild :D but you don't have one for the day :| if you want to you can make one and I can check back in a few hours since I'm off to do a quick run, the chair is stuck up my ass :D

Cheers mate! hope you have a good time, don't let yourself fall down, there are many people pushing past the struggles check out @jedau or @verbal-d or @fisteganos or @dragosroua for writing, @son-of-satire is a notable guy too @krnel nukes philopshy and there are a few other too , anyways those are my few cents, ally together with people that share your ideals and screw the rest :D viral videos are a virus :D not sure why I'm saying that but yeah I'm totally off the point anyways :D

Thank you for those kind words! I'm trying to spend some a good amount of time every week to socialize and curate. And as far as good quality posts go, Steemit still lags behind Reddit and Quora. The platform needs to attract more professionals in a wide range of domains to improve the general quality of posts, so that people like you and I would have another incentive to read posts other than just post and curate for the imminent reward.

I'll definitely check them out. :)
