My Thoughts on Beauty: Self-image
Today I would like to share my thoughts about self-image and how it affects us individually and as a society.
Firstly, let's talk about what is self-image.
Self-image is the way we see ourselves internally within our minds. This self-image can sometimes be good and sometimes bad. It is all dependent upon the way we view ourselves.
The way we see ourselves is affected by many factors. But mostly it is affected through our upbringing (such as childhood experiences), religion, society, culture and etc. Even the movies we watch, the songs that we listen to, the celebrities we admire, social media and etc affects the way we see ourselves internally.
That is why we a situation where a beautiful slim woman claiming to feel fat and ugly. Instead of admiring herself for the beauty she has, she begins to feel ugly for reasons she can find from other sources through her external environment.
Truth be told, I think that everyone on this planet is beautiful. It may sound that it is absurd to say such a thing but I think we are beautiful in our own uniqueness. No one is exactly the same as the other. Our fingerprint differentiates us from one another. That means we are unique and special.
However, the society we live in has set a standard of what beauty is through our culture and ethnicity we are in. Even social media these days affect many of us. Instead of embracing our own uniqueness we now compete to look like someone we are not.
We are fighting hard to look beautiful in the world where the standard keeps changing?
We are changing ourselves through plastic surgery and constant heavy makeup to look like someone we are not? Do not get me wrong, I am not against makeup. In fact, I think makeup is interesting artwork on our face but if we continue to use that to deny our true self, it will be damaging for our self-image.
In the midst of striving to be something we are not, we lose the very essence of our soul, which is the true beauty.
This kind of beauty stays deep within us. It never fails or fades when we get old. This kind of beauty is all about making ourselves more beautiful in our character. This kind of beauty is about love, kindness, peacefulness, gentleness.
Why isn't this kind of beauty popular in our society today?
