How to Identify Your Competencies and Build Them

One of the most important steps in the business cycle is to identify your competencies. Identify your strengths in the market and build on those strengths. You can do this by looking at the competition, learning about the trends in your industry, analyzing the skills of the competition, and doing a comprehensive talent assessment. These competencies will become your core competencies and become the basis of all your future efforts.


The first step is to understand what you are good at. For example, if you love to paint, then start identifying your core skills in painting and find some new things that you can master. Focus on improving what you already know. If you are good at strategic planning, then you need to learn how to do that in an exciting way. Focus on your skills that are related to the business and that you need to add into your business strategy.

You must focus on adding value to your business. Do what you can to help your customers get what they need. Learn what your customers need and learn to deliver those needs. Focus on your unique skills that add value to your business. These should include your creative skills, your technical skills, your management skills, your influence, your problem-solving skills, and your relationships with other people.

A good way to do this is to get out and start talking to others who are good in what you do. Ask them for advice and tips. Referrals are one of the fastest ways to get quality work. Networking is key to growing your organization. It is also a great way to network with other professionals who can help you with your career goals.

Once you have identified your skills, you need to focus on developing those skills. Get into a regular practice of developing new ones. For example, if your business requires you to use complex software, you may need to take more courses or attend more classes to get the skills you need.

Also make sure you get plenty of sleep. If you spend too much time awake worrying about the business, you won't be as productive as you could be. If you have good energy and lots of stamina, you will be able to get more done during the day and make wiser business decisions.

To make it easier to identify your abilities, write down your good points and your bad points. Analyze both and determine where you need to improve. Then get to work.

Make sure you do things the right way at all times. Don't get intimidated by people who tell you what they think you need to do. Identify your skills, and then do your best every day to show people how you can help them. When you are good at what you do, people will be eager to hire you. Once you identify your skills and build on them, you can do an amazing amount to help your business reach its potential.

Don't assume that your friend's or your co-workers have your best interest at heart. They may be trying to convince you to start your own business or expand your current one. Take their advice, but don't allow their opinions to push you in the wrong direction. Get all the information you can from people you can trust before you make your final decision.

When it comes to relationships with other people, the old saying, "If you want to make a good impression, forget about niceties" is true. There's no need to dress up for a dinner or to visit a charity. Just show up, do your job well, and get along with the other person. If you can do that, you won't need to work very hard to impress people.

The last step to identify your competencies and build them is to be honest with yourself. It's easy to get wrapped up in all the things you think you need to do. But once it's time to start doing them, you'll realize that there's so much more you can do. You may even find that you don't need to do as many of them as you thought. Sometimes it's better to leave something out than to underrate something you do know very well.
