Smith Mountain Lake, VirginiasteemCreated with Sketch.

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

My first travel post fellow steemians!

The most popular lake in Virginia for vacationers and retirees is over 40 miles long, comprised of 20,000+ acres, 500+ miles of shoreline, and surrounded by mountains. Water depth averages 80-150 feet in the main channels. The water is very clean and warm enough to swim in from May to September. Outdoor recreation galore including, jet skis, boats, tubing, wakeboarding, fishing, hiking, golfing, camping, hunting, shopping, antiquing, restaurants, marinas and a beach managed by the state park service. "Bassmasters" rated it in the top 25 best bass lakes in the United States.

Trip info:

Length of stay - 6 days, 5 nights
Number of people - 4
Lodging - 2 bedroom, 2 bath condo
Where we stayed - https://www.vrbo.com/4269174ha
Owner communication - excellent
Amenities - excellent

We took our rented boat to the Bridgewater Marina. Plan on at least half a day here because there's so much to do. They have courtesy slips for parking, fuel, several entertainment options for kids, food, live bands, and gift shops. There are tons of carp at the dock that the kids can feed popcorn and french fries. There's a shop called, "Gifts Ahoy" that has amazing fudge. "Moosie's" is a bar / restaurant that has a large selection of menu items including custom sandwiches with fine ingredients.

Everyone we met was pleasant and welcoming.

For my prepper, survival, and homesteader friends -

On each trip that we take I analyze and conduct a risk assessment.

This area has the following positives:

  1. Fresh water that can be boiled and purified year round.
  2. Tons of firewood.
  3. Wildlife galore.
  4. Community and culture are A+.
  5. Homesteaders are in the area. Look up Homestead Creamery in VA.
  6. The overall crime rate is low.
  7. Frequency of natural disasters is low.
  8. Distance from a major population is medium.
  9. Distance to a primary nuclear target - approximately 130 miles NE
  10. Nearest nuclear power plant - approximately 135 miles NE

Overall rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Great post! Keep it up

Thank you very much @breshepard. That means a lot to me. I saw the quality of your content and gave you a follow :)

Awesome, thanks so much! Looking forward
to seeing more of yours too!

Awesome post man. Love the soundtrack to the video too. Very suiting. Lol. That looks like a beautiful place to be and it looks like you have an awesome family to experience it with. Great risk assessment as well. 😀

Thank you sir. We sincerely appreciate your compliments and the resteem!

Anytime brother!

Beautiful photos, that sunset looks enchanting. I really like the assessment section. Half my family is in GA. I have always loved going to VA to visit friends. Mountains are a huge plus for homesteading and living a more back to earth lifestyle (imo), that is why I ended up in Cascadia.

Thanks @mamadini. If you ever get a chance, have your friends meet up at Smith Mountain Lake. No one will regret it! Thanks for the feedback on the assessment section. I hoped someone would find it useful.

It's so strange how I am not getting notices about replies, I am literally having to manually check them.

Yes, Smith Lake will be on my list next time I make it back out east.

I thought it was just my outdated computer but I haven't been getting any notifications for the past couple of days. Maybe it's a glitch or they temporarily turned them off since thousands of new subscribers are loading the servers. Thanks for checking back though! :)

At least your outdated computer is less able to track you and yours. ahahaha, I think about this stuff. This does make me feel better, clearly it's not just me. I think your assessment is correct, I did not realize there was another influx of people.
*Do ya'll ever watch Dahboo7?

I am sure they started tracking us way before my computer was manufactured. I digress. I have watched some of Dahboo7's videos in the past but his style didn't suit me. Nothing against his content, just a personal preference. What are your thoughts?

I agree, we have probably been on under the eye for years as we are total Don't tread on Me types -- plus, the hubby even uses that as a general screen saver and has the sticker on his dodge. hahaha.

I check in from time to time on Dahboo, I have been watching him for years though and have backed off the last couple years. I have a morning routine of Suspicious Observers, Fullspectrumsurvival's morning news and a few others, like Dirtpatchheaven, and offgridwithDougandStacy (and other homestead stuff). I only asked about Dahboo as I happened to be listening to his post from today about all the crazy with China as I was typing to ya'lls post. I really like We are Change.

Anyways, sorry to be so chatty I think it's the last day tea.

Have a great night. :)

Oh nice haha. I will have to check some of those channels out. Time to recharge my SteemPower...goodnight :)

Looks like a beautiful retreat @prep4shtf, I like the risk assessment part too 🙃

Thank you very much for your feedback @liberty-minded. The USS Minnow sails onward.

First of all, I love Smith Mountain lake. I've had some wild nights on house boats on that lake. Lol, here is a picture of me hanging under one of the bridges we climbed on from the house boat. I'm the guy on the right.

Great write up from a prepper perspective too. It is a very safe place, I agree. The closest real population is Roanoke and most of those people would travel east or west to escape and not south. My father in law lives nearby and we visit him and the lake every two years at least. Thanks for this great write up!!!

Thanks a lot for your positive feedback @walkingkeys! That is so cool that you have been there not once but several times. The picture of you hanging from the bridge is hilarious. Good times!

Thank you for the trip down memory lane. lol

Thanks for the great review.

Hello, Taica here. I am doing the selection of the most underrated posts and share it with my followers and the Steemit community. I my opinion there is too much quality content on Steemit which remains overlooked everyday and lost in the blockchain.

Here you can see my latest “Taica’s selection” containing your post, which I’ve also upvoted and resteemed.

All the best @taica

That's very generous of you @taica and I am humbled. Thank you!

Gorgeous area with a lot of wonderful natural resources for sure!

Looks like a great place to get away. Water is beautiful. Catch a few for the rest of us! Have fun. 🐓🐓

It surely is! The water was pretty, warm, and clean. This was our first time and will most likely go back again. Thanks for your reply :)

Now that's being prepared doing a risk assessment. If you really want a safe vacation you need to go to the Caverns in the area. I have 3 right near me. Luray Caverns, Endless Caverns and Shenandoah Caverns which is in walking distance of me. Nice video of your trip you shared also. Looks like a good time. Yeah you probably went right by my house on the way there. Thanks for sharing man!

I heard there's lots of caves near there but we didn't get a chance this trip. Maybe next time though. Thanks for your compliments and taking the time to check it out fellow Virginian! :)

I like that post a lot. You did an excellent job! I am going to resteem it for you because it deserves more attention and upvotes.

Thank you man. Yeah its awful sometimes you write good stuff and it goes unnoticed.

You're very welcome and I empathize with you on quality content going unnoticed. It's almost like being invisible sometimes...

Yes it is. I went ahead and followed you. I'll be checking your stuff. Thanks again and have a good night my friend!

Outstanding thank you! Time to recharge my SteemPower. My upvotes are lowering in value.
