Infectious mononucleosis is a type of disease caused by a herpes virus(herpesviridae) known as the Epstein-Barr virus. Epstein-Barr virus(EBV) can also be called human herpes virus4. The Epstein-Barr virus can be spread and contacted through direct body contact from fluids of infected individuals, fluids such as blood, semen and saliva. Mode of transmission through saliva is more rampant than other fluids. However, one can contact the virus EBV through a cold or flu.
Infectious mononucleosis can also be called glandular fever.
The disease, mononucleosis is more common in children, adolescents and young adults between the age range of 18 to 25years. Infectious mononucleosis is usually rare in adults.

SYMPTOMS OF INFECTIOUS MONONUCLEOSIS

Symptoms of infectious mononucleosis normally occur after two weeks of contamination/infection and may not exceed the fourth week. In some cases, the incubation period may take up to two months.
Some of the symptoms of infectious mononucleosis include:
•A sore throat
•Severe headaches
•Fever
•Swollen glands in the underarms

WIKIPEDIA

Symptoms of infectious mononucleosis are more noticeable in adolescents and young adults. Individuals that have not been previously infected also show more symptoms of the disease than those who have been infected
However, infectious mononucleosis is usually mild in children and at times may be confused with a common cold or flu. Younger children can also develop an immunity to the virus if they come in contact with it at an early age.

MODE OF TRANSMISSION/CONTAMINATION

  1. Through the saliva
    -Kissing
-Sharing of drinking containers like cups
    -Sharing of toothbrush
    -Another salivary contact
  2. Sexual contact
  3. Through blood transfusion
  4. Through organ transplant

Mode of transmission is mainly through the saliva

PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF INFECTIOUS MONONUCLEOSIS

  1. Infected individuals/patients should avoid salivary contact with others until when treated
  2. Not sharing drinking cups
  3. Using a personal toothbrush

TREATMENT OF INFECTIOUS

Infectious mononucleosis is usually self-limiting and can resolve itself. An individual infected normally can get cure with time.
However, some measures can be applied to aid treatment more rapidly, which include:

  1. The use of pain relievers to reduce headaches
  2. Bed rest
  3. Taking in of much quantity of water
  4. Washing of hands with soap and water especially after sneezing
