Hello there everyone this is @prakhar9675 this side and this homework post is for professor @yohan2on.

So let's answer all the questions asked by the professor.

Internet of things


Internet of things or IOT ,which was first used by Kevin Ashton, is the system of connected devices with each other which shares data with each other in a common language so that every Device can understand that data about how the connected appliances were used.

For this purpose sensors are used which are connected with the hardware of the device and these sensor collects and shares data.
These data is used for enhancing the efficiency of the device as well as to make the whole system work more fluently and to increase user experience.

On our daily basis we use many appliances which are Practical application of internet of things for example :- smart watches which shows you calories burnt and which can give you the location of your child, on your phone,wearing that watch.

Real life example of application of internet of things:-

The perfect example of application of internet of things is apple ecosystem developed by Apple and harmony OS which is based on Android developed by Huawei

We have seen in apple ecosystem that by connecting Mac book, iPhone, and iPad we can use all of those easily by just a single cursor.

Similarly with the harmony OS we can connect even our car compatible with harmony OS to unlock it.

How internet of things can be applied to our daily lives:-

So let's take a look how internet of things can be applied to our daily lives.
My father runs a school, so let's have a look how can we use this technology for our comfort.

By using the sensor on the main gate, we can easily calculate how many students/person entered the school building and at which time. And then by using another sensor connected with fingerprint sensor, we can calculate which students are present Today and which student entered the school/class at which time. And by sharing this data to our computer, we can get to know on which date how many students were present or absent without wasting any time. We can share that data with a system which can send SMSs to guardians of the students whenever the student is late or absent.

Similarly these things can be applied at a various places.

THE FUTURE OF IoT, it's challenges and how these challenges can be overcome using the blockchain technology


Earlier low spread of internet, expensive and bulky chips and lack of technology hindered the pace of development of IoT. But now with the internet revolution in the world, wide network coverage of internet and development of cheaper and light chips has mostly overcome the earlier mentioned problems.

But still there are many problems which will grow with the spread of IoT. Some of those major problems and how using the blockchain technology we can overcome these problems are given below.

Privacy threats:- As we know that data in internet of things is dumped into a centralised data server and from there anyone who has access can see your data.

Now a days smart watches have your location and data of calories burnt, smart keys which can unlock your cars are connected with this. And in case if anyone breaches into that centralised server, can access your location, can unlock your car and do many other things.

But this problem can be resolved by using blockchain technology. We have studied about Cryptography where keys are used to encrypt and decrypt data. Similarly by using that technology here, we can encrypt the data by using the key and that data only can be decrypted using the key which will only he possessed by authorised person. Even if anyone unauthorised gets access to the data, that person will not be able to decrypt the data without decryption key.

Security:- As we know that data of IoT is stored in a centralised server which is more prone to hack and getting attacked with many types of different attacks such as Denial of service (DoS) attack, distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack etc.

These types of attack affects the efficiency of the system and in most cases data is compromised or is changed.

By using the blockchain technology, we can overcome this difficulty. As we know that blockchain has the feature of immutability of data which ensures the data can't be destroyed or altered after its verified and stored in nodes. And as there is no central server, DDoS and DoS attack can't take place

By adopting this feature we can make IoT data immutable, even if data is compromised (which will be encrypted as we discuss in the previous section), it can't be destroyed or altered. And also it will prevent DDoS and DoS attack.

scalability of network:- As all the data of IoT is stored in a server, the rise in the number of devices will increase the data. And as only central server maintain the whole data and process it to extract valuable data from noise, it will make the central server less scalable while maintaining that data.

By using the blockchain technology we can resolve this problem too. As we know that with the Introduction of many consensus such as proof of stake, the scalability of blockchain has been improved tremendously. Thus by using the blockchain technology we can make the IoT system more scalable and also by sharing the data processing work to many nodes available,we can reduce the load on a single server.

Compatibility issues:- As now a days many institutions are developing IoTs and every institute has its own standards for how these devices will communicate. This gave rise to the compatibility issues.

For example, we discussed about the harmony OS which runs of open source android and apple ecosystem which runs on iOS. These IoT will work properly with devices which runs on these OS. But the compatibility issues arise when we tries to connect harmony OS computer with a Mac book.

This compatibility issues can be resolved with the application of blockchain. As blockchain has a consensus which will establish a standard for every institution to make devices compatible with that.

This will give rise to the compatibility among many devices.

Filament


Filament is a technology company which js based in Reno, USA. The main reason behind its popularity is that this company implement blockchain technology in IoTs which can be used in many different sectors such as energy, construction, and transportation.

This company was founded by Allison Clift-Jennings in 2012. Filament implement blockchain technology in IoTs which makes it more secure and scalable and it reduces the time taken to process data and delay time in sharing data with other devices.

Currently filament is in collaboration with many giant companies of different sectors to provide those with such secure and scalable IoTs to use for different purposes. And Intel and JetBlue are some of those.

IoT BLOCKCHAIN USE CASE

  1. Formulation of blockchain based IoTs compatible standard:- Recently when filament joined the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance which js best known as EEA and formulated some standards and rule for compatibility which will be used by all the blockchain based IoTs. This will make ethereum blockchain products compatible.

  2. Blocklet chip:- Recently filament announced his new product named blocklet chip. This chip enables any industrial device to get connected with one of many blockchain. This chip when is connected with any device and if device is compatible, the device gets connected with the blockchain. This aslo ensures the immutability of the data by connecting it with the blockchain.

  3. Driver less cars:- Recently when Filament announced its collaboration with University of Nevada, it's announced that this collaboration would give rise to the development of driver less cars which will navigate itself to the destination. And to secure the cars so that its basic codes aren't tempered with, these codes will be written and stored in blockchain and cars will access those using internet.

As now a days, all tech giant are developing the IoTs to make life easier and go increase the efficiency of the product. But at the same time, it's giving rise to the privacy breach and security threats as by breaching the data everyone can see every minor details about the person using IoT. Like location from smart watches and many other.

But with the implementation of blockchain technology in IoTs we can overcome many of these difficulties such as program of self driving cars can't be altered otherwise any by altering the codes can misuse the car.

And in this way, filament is doing a great job. This company was gound in 2012 when blockchain was not that popular and this company had a vision which shows us the Visionary side of the founders.
And also filament is in collaboration with many tech giant such as intel to provide better and secret IoTs and we will see these products in the upcoming days very soon.
