A POOR CONCEPT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (THEOLOGY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT PART ONE)
INTRODUCTION:
Theology of the Holy Spirit as a course is dealing with our frantic human attempt to think clearly and correctly about the person and works of the Holy Spirit; by studying from the word of God to discover all that the writers of both the Old and New Testament of the Bible revealed to us through their writings about the Holy Spirit from Genesis where he was first mentioned.
Theology of the Holy Spirit is a theological and historical examination of the person and work of the Holy Spirit from the Old Testament times to the present.
These materials which will take us few series will endeavors to assist the reader in building a systematic theology of his own as related to the Holy Spirit.
Therefore you are required to study the material with an open mind.
One of the great dangers we are facing these days is lack of understanding of the Holy Spirit.
The sinners remains wicked and the saints on the other hand remain weak today because they do not understand the person and work of the Holy Spirit.
Do you know who he is, where he came from or why he is here?
The general truth, in the old testament of the Bible is that, there is one God, who is known as the creator, the almighty God and as Jehovah. Deut. 6:4.
But in the New Testament the great truth is that God is a triune God. Who has revealed himself to us as God the father, God the son and God the Holy Spirit? This truth is clearly presented in the Bible and it takes the help of the holy Spirit to understand it because it is spiritually discerned.
Satan has been attacking this fundamental truth of Christianity because he knows that the Christian faith stands or falls there with.
Apart from the fact that he has moved many people to disbelieve the existence of God (and such people are called the atheist). He has also raised many religions cults in the world and empowers them to carry out false teachings about Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit; just to keep people from receiving salvation through believing in these fundamental truths.
Here is what some religious groups are teaching about the Holy Spirit.
A. “The Holy Spirit is the invisible active force of the Almighty God that moves his servants to do his will”.
B. “As for the Holy Spirit; the so-called third person of the Trinity; we have already seen that it is, not a person, but God’s active force”.
C. “The scriptures themselves unite to show that God’s Holy Spirit is not a person but is God’s active force by which he accomplishes his purpose and executes his will.
When someone refused to believe and abide by the truths about the deity of Christ and that of the Holy Spirit, he has no hope of salvation from sin and eternal life through Jesus Christ.
This is why John the apostle warned the Christians concerning such people and advice they should avoid them because they are not from God.
“Beloved believe not every Spirit, but try the Spirits whether they are of God; because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God; every Spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God. And every spirit that confessth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God and this is the spirit of antichrist. Where of ye have heard that it should come and even now already is in the world”. 1John 4:1-3.
The devil also takes away the biblical knowledge of the third person in trinity (as we have seen already from the above quotation) and replaces it with falsehood. Even some Christians especially those who come from these religions cults background are still in doubt of the person of the Holy Spirit. You may not believe this, but that is true.
Paul the apostle could not have believed that there are some disciples who knew nothing about the Holy Spirit until he summoned courage to ask them. Let us read his experience in Ephesus. 19:1-6;
“And it came to pass, that while Appollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coast came to Ephesus and funding certain disciple. He said unto them, have you received the Holy Ghost since you believed? And they said unto him we have not so much heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.” Acts 19:1-2.
These disciples represents millions of professing Christians in our various churches who are not practically aware that the Holy spirit is not merely an atmosphere, influence or active force, but a divine person. Some do not know whether the Holy Spirit is living in them. Even after reading from the Bible that as Christians,
“Ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any men have not the Spirit of Christ he is none of his. “Rom. 8:9.
In fact the Holy Spirit is probably the least known member of trinity. It is very sad to see that many Christians lack the full knowledge of the person and work of the Holy Spirit. We may not fully comprehend the bad feelings, the headaches and the bad broken fellowships resulting from our poor understanding of the Holy Spirit.
