NATURAL MEDICINE CHALLENGE #5 - Survival Medicine

Asks

What would be your 'survivor' natural medicines?
This challenge asks you to look carefully at your natural medicine first aid kit and ask: what plants or other natural remedies would be the best ones in a survival situation?

outdoorsurvival bug out bag.jpg

I began thinking if there had been a complete economic collapse and marauders were entering the neighborhood – would I stay and protect my home or bug out into my familiar forest surroundings?

I have all my valuables secured and the forest has an abundance of natural foods and medicines.

My bug out bag is all packed –

 Food stuff such as dehydrated fruits and vegetables, energy bars, ghee.
 Salt
 Matches in a waterproof container
 Small Tools - saw, hatchet, good knife, multi-tool
 Collapsible water container and water purifying tablets
 Compass
 Hand cranked flashlight
 Plastic Sheeting/Tarps
 Mylar Survival Blanket
 Rope
 Candles
 Duct Tape
 Hand Cranked Radio
 Cell phone with charger
 Crank power charger
 Change of clothes in waterproof bag

What is missing is my medical kit.

It would be your standard first aid kit with 3 added extras that I feel is very important when out in the bush.

colloidial silver, goldenseal and Oil of Oregan.JPG

1st An Ionic Silver Solution – Colloidal Silver

It has anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory even anti-tumor qualities that makes it a good remedy for various infections and illnesses. It helps to prevent infections, reduces swelling and speeds healing and can be taken internally and externally.

2nd The Dynamic duo of Goldenseal and Echinacea

(I chose extracts because they concentrate the active ingredients)
Goldenseal has antibiotic properties and properties that stimulate appetite, aid digestion and helps in the production of bile to help with digestive problems.
It has also been used for internal bleeding, fever, pneumonia, applied topically for rashes, ulcers and wound infections.
Especially good for irritations and inflammation of the mucous membranes of the respiratory, digestive and urinary tracts.
It’s anti-microbial and immune boosting activity makes it a good combination with Echinacea which has the added blood purifying activity. Both are excellent for treatment of colds and flu.

3rd Oregano Oil

It is an anti-flammatory, has antibacterial qualities and more. Oregano oil is another one that is good for cold and flu.
It is used against fleas, lice, mosquitoes, even bed bugs and tape worms. It’s good for the digestive and respiratory system, plus for joint health.

Would you bug out in theses circumstances? Or stay home and defend the home place?

Bugging out!!! Awesome!!! I really have to get some oregano oil. And goldenseal! I'm amazed by how many people love those two things, and since Natural Medicine started I've realised how great these two are!!! Love your post!

Yes, they are my go to herbs mostly for colds and flu but also for other infections.

That really is a good question about staying or going. We actually live surrounded by deep forest as well and we have talked about having a bug out plan. Great post and I love the natural medicines that you chose to bring along with you !!

Yes, bugging out makes sense if you are at home in the forest. I always home it never comes to this but it is always best to prepare.

Hmmmm... I thought for a moment as I read your headline that your medicines were going to be ground-up bugs or similar…

😜

Ha! That's funny! although ground up crickets is becoming a main stay for some folks as a protein source. I have tried chocolate covered ants before and fried grass hopper legs. Both were quite palatable!

The post is useful and eye opener. I was planning my family trip end of the year. The bug out bag is sure Will be with us while travelling. Thanks.

You're welcome! Glad to be of some help!

Excellent medications for your botiquin @porters. I would like to ask you a question, and I will be very grateful if you can answer it, since it is for a research work. The question is, how many types of oregano are given in your country of origin? and with what names? I am interested in knowing, and I know that you have a lot of knowledge of medicinal plants!

The wild oregano does not grow in my region I buy a bottled form of prepared tincture. Although someone from the @naturalmedicine community did a post on the wild oregano and it's uses etc. try there.

Excellent, I have in my plot oregano, here are two types, the common oregano, and the large oregano. But in the research that I have been doing I found that there are other species of oregano, around about 60, including the Mexican oregano, the Syrian oregano and the Greek oregano. but I do not know those other species and I'm intrigued. Thank you!!
