But Soleimani was evil.

in #war6 years ago

Deary me, of course Soleimani was evil. But that's not the point. The point is that one man has the power to blow things up and kill people anywhere on the planet at his sole discretion, without oversight, without authorisation, without debate or transparency. This is the greater evil, exacerbated by the fact that he himself is wholly wicked.

And sadly, this is what the two parties gave us after 9/11; President(s) capable of unleashing war at any scale. Take a look at the Democrats, they aren't condemning this with strong words. Despite Republican voters being idiots who think Obama was soft on terror ("because he was secretly Muslim"), they know very well that he used the same power Trump is now wielding to wage illegal wars in Syria and Libya. They know that to condemn Trump too strongly now may mean criticising Obama's legacy - a risky play considering the primaries and your base having their own fictional version of the Obama presidency.

The anti-war left disappeared the moment Obama took office, this, despite doubling down on Bush-era policies. Now there is no movement, no effort, to stand in the way of Trump continuing what Bush started. Most "libertarians" have only commented to sneer at "leftist hypocrisy"before returning to their usual routine of bashing social justice warriors and whining about women in Marvel movies. The ones that are taking an actual stand on both the libertarian left and right simply don't have the numbers the massive anti-war movement had prior to 2008.

The scary thing is, Trump won't stop, and even if he loses and is replaced by your next favourite candidate, the Pandora's box is open. Someone worse is coming; someone both stupendously malicious, soullessly degenerate, intelligent, who will take the power we've all ceded to the executive branch in the name of "national security" and "patriotism" and "getting around partisan gridlock" to do the kinds of things that get highlighted in long, sad segments of history books, even amid the particularly dark chapters of a nation's history.

It isn't about evil men like Soleimani

It isn't even about evil men like Trump. It IS about the whole host of greedy, grasping parasites, every would-be tyrant with nice smiles and sharp teeth, who look out at the world in ways that would frighten the average person, who posses such breathtaking confidence in their best-laid plans that not even the deaths of millions can dissuade them from the belief that they were right all along; who, when the dust settles, and the wreckage clears, and the world looks back at the horror and misery of another pointless war, will retire to obscene wealth and prestige, enjoying book deals and Presidential libraries and fawning revisionist narratives as the next piece of degenerate filth slithers its way into the Oval Office.
