My Life As A Music Producer

Well first of all I started making music at age 12 started off like crap then moved up on my craft. School was always tough for me some things I just wasn't good at I'm like a smart slow person I was diagnosed with problems but there are things that I can excel in and music was one of those things. It was hard for me to communicate I always had issues trying to break out my shell but after going through a lot with music now I tend to be more sociable I can do things that others find difficult.

I used to want to rap made a few songs but the true passion was in to instrumentals and making beats. I used to go to band class and try to make up my own songs lol. I always seemed more interested in that then school I mean I failed just about every subject and they pretty much gave me graduation I just had things that I could excel in that high school didn't offer the only math I knew was to count my own money everything else is history. I used to make beats off of a Yamaha and record them off the keyboard. I made a few records in high school they were ok but they are no way better then the beats I make now.

I have been on Reverb Nation and at first it was hard for me to push my music out there to people it really took a while to figure out how to push my music out. At first I was just using facebook and only reached out to my town but what it took was reaching out to other artists on the internet. I started to try marketing failed but you want to know why? I didn't know what I was doing, went to the wrong places for information, tried to put the cart before the horse, didn't try to make people interested just tried to post and hope people would listen to my music. That's not how it works it works with interactions giving people a reason to listen to you by putting yourself out there.

I seemed to try the wrong things like everyone else would, shoot I used to just advertise a YouTube link on Facebook. Now if I knew what I did now I would've tried more of a better strategy but that's just life lessons everyone will lose sometimes and I accept that. I used to get on Soundclick which was a bad move because for one I wasn't that established and 2 Soundclick is not a good platform it hasn't been for the last few years with the exception of producers who've been on there already.

I used to sell myself short which was a big mistake giving away free beats (too much). Now there's nothing wrong with that the contracts is a good thing to have and copyrights especially if you give all beats for free. For a while I had all my beats on my site available free now you would have to get them off of e-mail personally because I wouldn't know where they would be going or if anyone would be sorry enough to not give me credit (of course). Then there was a time where I was too paranoid about my beats and didn't want them to go nowhere without a buy which really runs people off. Some people want to try them out and then buy or just want to play around with the beat. Those people you could use as word of mouth ya know and reach your buzz on your fan base.

At the same time I looked into marketing I was going through the loss of my Dad which and for a while just didn't care all I wanted to do was get stoned all the time, get drunk and feel sorry for myself. Now I'm stronger life is about getting over things because shit won't stop piling up and always seemed a bit depressed for a long time but like I said "get over it". Had a take out shop my mom and I that went out of business in October of last year which was a bit of a blow to me and now I'm trying to clear everything up not something you would want to deal with after working your ass off for 4 years.

I'm 25 now and you just learn to deal with it or die with it your not the only one struggling as a musician or a human being. Now I just want to build everything back up and continue the legacy of my music. I'll keep trying and keep moving on with it.

Exactly! So many people don't get this! Thanks for sharing your story!

its no problem man funny thing i used to be like that if people just slow down off that and try to bond with people they'll see more success

Best of luck! Have you tried perhaps getting an agent / a producer? Normally artist will have an easier time practicing their craft, while someone else practices theirs. That's a happy solution if both parties are interested. And I don't mean necessarily signing with a huge label company. There are as many up starting marketers as there are musicians, and a friend in need is a friend indeed, if for nothing else, then for the lovely experience of working together.

yeah man i have thought about that just can't find noone here i can trust or work with

:(
Keep lookin!
If anything then, learning marketing will help you find marketers, and after all, it's good for ya! Just that the time is limited. (I mean it's fun to learn whatever, but with doing we all want to specialize.) Of all the professions, I'd say getting a good marketing colleague is the hardest for artists to find.
What do you think @arrrados (he's my marketing colleague, so maybe he has some good advice)

ill check him out I got the basics in so more R&D never hurt nobody
