Song of the Peacock (A Poem about a Date I had/ My travel to a Zoo)...

Song of the Peacock

I was walking through a humble zoo
And saw some big tortoise and emu.
My sisters came, and my boyfriend, too.
We walked the path of vibrant bamboo.

We stood on the bridge over the pond
And saw turtles on the log beyond.
Then we saw the cutest prairie dog
Straight and tall above the morning fog.

The pink flamingos stood on one leg
While a big goose nested on her egg.
I saw some pink, blooming hollyhock,
And I came across a green shamrock…

When I found the green shamrock welcome,
I knew that the best was yet to come.
Then I saw a zebra take a bow.
And I heard a call that said, “me-YOW!”.

So I turned around on the sidewalk
To see the most lively of peacock.
He stood up to stretch every feather
Which showcased in the lovely weather.

His eyes were solely on his Mrs.
He called to send her many kisses.
She was walking to budding heather,
Followed by babies close together.

Off in the distance, I heard, “me-YOW!”
The “me” sound was softer than the “YOW”.
The loud “me-YOW” calling grew and grew
And it traveled all across the zoo.

I knew it was another peacock.
We followed the sound past a hemlock.
And there he was upon a small roof,
Standing so beautiful and aloof.

I stopped in my tracks with shock and awe,
Blinking my eyes at what I just saw.
It was as white as fresh fallen snow,
Resting on top of the brown chateau.

He came down with such poise and such grace
And opened his feathers like fine lace.
It was stunning to see this peacock!
He saw his girl and began to squawk…

“Me-YOW! Me-YOW!” and he spun about.
His feathers and his dance were all tricked out.
We took pictures of the lovely sight.
So many peacocks! What a delight!

We returned back from the way we came.
The wooden fence there was still the same.
It was a fun trip to see the zoo
And the peacocks dressed in cobalt blue.

One came and perched on the wooden fence
To bid us farewell in present tense.
As we left, we passed by hollyhock,
And heard “me-YOW!”--- the song of the peacock.

The End

*** I just wrote this poem today. Three years ago today, I had the date that I wrote about in this poem. The peacocks were so lovely, including the more rare looking one I mention, he was simply majestic! Although it captures a memory of a date with my (now) husband, I wrote it in a fun way that would make the poem fun to read to children.
