Our garden adventure

On Friday, we are leaving to Slovakia for Christmas and I am so excited to spend a couple of days with my family. It's going to be a long journey, but I will forget about it as soon as we arrive there.

When I tell people how often we go there they are usually surprised as it's quite far away and we use almost all vacation days for this destination. But family is important to us and we both enjoy being there. Don't get me wrong though. I like going there on vacation, but I cannot imagine returning to my home country yet. I might actually never return. I hope that one day our family will follow us and move out of the country as well.

Last time that we went to Slovakia was in August this year. Everything was blooming and we were enjoying delicious fruits and veggies from our family garden. We have good relationships with my aunts and uncles as well, so they share their harvest with us too. One of my aunts used to live in Canada for 20 years. When she left Slovakia, her kids were teenagers and they never recovered from her decision. She came back 2 years ago and wasn't able to build a relationship with them yet. She is a sweet lady and I hope that they will manage to become a family again.

When she came back she bought a garden in the hope that she will be able to share the harvest with her kids. This however hasn't happened yet but as she can't eat everything on her own we got a great share of her fruits and veggies. We visited her garden and collected as much as we could carry. Believe me, it was a lot as we came there by car. We got some tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, kohlrabi, peppers, garlic, cabbage and beetroot.

Her garden is situated in a very nice place. It is surrounded by hills and offers great views.

There is a cemetery nearby but she said that she hasn't seen a ghost yet 😊

We came there just in time for these delicious blackberries.

As she doesn't use any chemicals we ate them directly from the bush. I loved that! They taste so much better in nature!

She loves flowers and has so many of them. I'm very bad with names of flowers, so I have no idea but you might recognize some of them.

Some of them look so delicate. I'm always in awe of what nature is capable of. All those beautiful colors and intriguing details. It's amazing!

These flowers come in so many colors...

It's been many years since I stopped getting fresh flowers for my apartment. I believe that we should leave nature as it is and admire it from our position as observers. There are other options how to decorate your home.

These flowers are edible. Their scent is not the most pleasant one but they are good if you want to get rid off certain bugs.

She also had many plums and we noticed that most of them already had their inhabitants. It means that they were sweet as the worms only choose the best fruits.

This one looks good at first but if you look closer you will see a tiny hole, so we left it alone.

And tomatoes! These taste so much better than those that you get in a grocery store. Some people even enjoy eating them like apples. I like to cut them in small pieces and eat them on a toast with garlic and basil. So delicious!

And they were gigantic. This one would be enough for me for lunch..

And here we have our two workers: My husband and my aunt.

My husband didn't know that he would have to work, so he didn't dress accordingly but he enjoyed digging out those carrots. Look at that happy smile! They never grown vegetables at home and he is excited to try anything we do in our family as he likes nature and is fascinated about growing his own food. I'm sure that one day he will become a farmer...

Now, I'm going to continue packing and watching traditional Slovak fairy tales which make me feel like Christmas even thought it's sunny and 12 degrees Celsius outside.

Thank you for visiting!

Cheers!
