How important are translators?

in #translation8 years ago

Translation.. Since the dawn of days, languages have conquered the planet. From time to time, one wrote a book about something. Maybe, that person wanted to translate it to other languages, so people from other countries can read it as well. The problem with that was that you definitely couldn't speak all languages, so people invented a new job: The Translator.

The Translator is one of the most powerful figures in the world. Without translating, our civilization would be a whole lot smaller, simply because only a small part of the world speaks 2 or more languages fluently. The Translator is thus not only a great moneymaker, he's also a great connector, as he connects the whole world together.

As you see in the picture above, the most important thing that holds the planet together, is the translator. I'm a translator, so please respect me. "I can let it fly apart just as well as I can hold it together.", as a wise man once said.

Now I'm not saying that everyone should become a translator. We also need scientists, Engineers, Developers, Politicians who earn way too much money for their simple work, managers, garbage belt workers, designers, models, actors, teachers, painters and much more! It's just... Translators are so underrated. People always assume translators to... just be there, but they are more important than anything else in the world.

What would happen if we had translators who were giving wrong translations on purpose? Suppose this scenario:

Trump just gave an awesome speech about liberty and how the Russians have so much liberty too. However, a Russian translator would have the power to turn that speech about liberty into a nightmare! What if he translated "The Russians are awesome and its inhabitants have a lot of freedom! We must give them some money for their awesome work!" as "The Russians are awful and its inhabitants shouldn't have any freedom! We must give them some bombs for their insane behaviour!".

Trump: "Hey Putin, liked my speech?"
Putin: "ffs bruh, ready yo rockets, I sense a war is coming up ahead."

As you see, don't underestimate the power of Translators!

Translators are really underrated. Maybe because these jobs are also replaced by machines. There are many software which can do the job, e.g. Google Translate.

However, machines cannot always be correct and much accurate like a human being, at least in translating things.

I wish these poor translators get some recognition.

BTW awesome post and art @pizzachain. 😊
