Ulimited Editing Could Destroy Steemit
This article is in response to a recent update described in a post from @steemitblog
Steemit is apparently about to role out a system that allows for unlimited editing. In otherwords, unlike the current system, people will be allowed to edit their posts more than seven days after the posts were made.
Although I can see why people would want the ability to edit older posts, I feel that this could open a Pandora's Box of problems. One concern I have about the Unlimited Editing idea is that it allows for potential censorship on Steemit. Before now, if you made it 7 days, there just wasn't a way to get rid of things. Now it seems like people could be pressured by governments, organizations, or individuals to change their articles or even delete them. In my opinion, this would essentially destroy Steemit.
My other concern is not as serious, but still worth considering in my opinion. This change will make it easy for people to misrepresent the beliefs of others. One could simply edit an older article that somebody upvoted, to make it look like they support something they actually disagree with. This may be more petty, but it could still lead to a lot of confusion. And after all, it's not like there isn't a lot of petty drama on this site already...
Because of the nature of the blockchain, even if someone edits a post, you can still see all revisions using a blockchain explorer. Whatever is posted here cannot be removed, but editing will allow outdated info to be addressed, especially posts which are high on google search results.
