New Mexico Sky

I have always been enamored with the sky of my home state. The sky is a bright, endless blue, incredibly vivid. Because of the high altitude and incredible weather of New Mexico, the visibility is great, and you can see far off into the distance.

This visibility, as well as the low population density in the many wide open spaces of the New Mexican desert also offer incredible stargazing opportunities. New Mexico was one of the pioneer states in legislation offering protection of dark skies. There are many dark sky parks around the state that prohibit unnecessary electricity at night for optimum stargazing.

On top of the lovely night skies, the sunsets of this state are truly remarkable. I am often breathless more evenings than not at the sight of the colorful sky at sunset. The many mountaintops of the state offer prime locations for sunset viewing.

There are a million reasons to visit New Mexico (the green chile, the unique culture, the amazing people...), but if you need an excuse to visit, you’ll never see a more beautiful sky.
