Gallo Campground- A Unique Camping Experience

Tucked away in the northwestern corner of the state, New Mexico's desert is deceptively full of hidden treasures One of those treasures being Gallo Campground, a national park camping locale that is unlike any other. Gallo Campground offers a unique camping experience just east of the storied and mysterious Chaco Canyon National Historical Park.

The campground itself is actually nestled alongside the canyon wall. The high desert landscape is rugged, yet beautiful. Although there are no trees or offerings of shade in the camping area, groves of cottonwood and willow along the arroyo created by the Gallo Wash are visible. A summer visit will have displays of orange blooming desert mallow, as well as other wildflowers, scattered throughout the sparse grassland and desert shrub.

Gallo Campground is unique in the fact that it offers the opportunity to camp alongside authentic petroglyphs and an lasting cliff dwelling, presumably constructed approximately 900 years ago. A stay in Gallo Campground should prelude a visit to the Chaco Canyon ruins, where you can wander the maze of massive cliff dwellings and archaeological wonders left behind by ancient peoples. However, proximity to this historic World Heritage Site is not the only asset of Gallo Campground. As a National Dark Sky Park, restrictions are in place to promote optimal stargazing. The seclusion offered at Gallo provides unparalleled stargazing. Because of this seclusion there are no services available at this campground with the exception of well maintained bathrooms. Due to this isolation, it is imperative that you arrive prepared. The desert environment can get extremely hot and you will want to be equipped with lots of water.
