Ball Tailed Cat: Fearsome Critter

in #folklore8 years ago

Similar to other fearsome critters for it’s catlike appearance, the ball tailed cat is alleged to be precisely as its name suggests. Said to be near identical to a mountain lion, with one defining difference: a large ball like protuberance on its tail. The ball is a solid mass, which this mythological creature uses to attack its prey.

There are a few variations on this figure of American folklore, both still cat creatures with ball tipped tails. One, the silver cat, would drum its tail against its chest to attract mates. Another variation, the dingmaul, had spikes upon the knob of his tail.

All variations of the ball tailed cat use the orb at the end of their tail to beat their prey to a pulp, and also to drum it around on trees, explaining the strange thuds that woodsmen would hear in the forests. The ball tailed cat, a child of the forest, is said to be a much better climber and more apt at stalking prey through trees than on the ground.
