Tourism in the Rhône
Tourism in the Rhone is to discover a whole story. This department was created during the French Revolution, in 1793, by dismemberment of the Rhône-et-Loire, and corresponds to the provinces of Lyonnais and Beaujolais. It takes its name from the river that runs through it.
The Rhône department is part of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It has grown several times:
in 1790: annexation of the district of Guillotière belonging to the province of Dauphine;
in 1852: 4 communes of Isère: Bron, Vaulx-en-Velin, Vénissieux and Villeurbanne;
in 1967: 6 communes of Ain and 23 communes of Isère;
in 1971: a commune of Isère: Colombier-Saugnieu.
