Learn The Alphabet In American Sign Language

in #asl6 years ago

If you learn just the alphabet in ASL, you can say anything, even if you're slow! In the first round, I turn my hand around so you can see exactly what position my fingers are in; in the second round, I don't, so you can see how you would normally hold it to just sign to someone.
If you think it wouldn't be any faster to sign spelling everything out than to write back and forth to each other, consider this: when I was doing my medical assisting externship (read: that's an unpaid internship), we had a patient who had been a patient at that doctor's office for years come in, notepad and pens at the ready. I offered to interpret, and I only know a handful of words that I don't have to spell. The appointment took 45 minutes - and the patient and the doctor both said that was half as long as normal. Writing is slow. Signing is fast, even if you're not very good! :)

Finding a niche and doing something with it is greatly appreciated.
Keep up the good work,

Love it! My cousin was born with a myriad health issues including being mostly non-verbal. I was fluent in ASL as a child to be able to communicate with her!

But my Aunt moved them all to Arizona when I was in the 8th grade and I've forgotten all but the most basic, probably around 20-30 signs and the alphabet.

You're an inspiration, Phe! I'm going to brush up and teach the trio. 💜💜💜

Yeah, if you don't use it, you lose it, me too! I was getting better and better at it because I had a coworker who was deaf, and she was the one who taught me. I learned words we needed in our every day speech first, which is the best way to learn, instead of some foreign language textbook full of things you are never going to say. But I haven't lived in that same town where my friend is for years, and so I only get to use it sporadically now, like with that patient, or when I worked customer service maybe a couple of times.
The funny story is when I was a returns cashier, I saw that my coworker was doing the writing back and forth thing with a customer, so when I was done with my customer, I offered to come over and interpret. ...just as the two customers were signing to each other that my coworker was a bitch. I giggled, and they gasped, not sure if I understood naughty words or not (I do). I told them don't worry, I won't tell. And we finished the transaction. XD

LOVE LOVE LOVE the idea ! I am certainly going to try , upvoted and @bennierex I know we talked about this months ago ..... maybe this is a sign😬

Pun, pun! It's a sign!

Keeping this open to show the boys later, they know a couple letters, this is gonna be sooooo great for them to see it from you Phe!! And congrats on the love from blockbrothers, I vote their witness <3 <3 <3 Bunch of sweeties. And excellent witness. Always keeping us informed!

Is it the same system in Canada?

OK, I googled: https://www.quora.com/Which-signed-languages-are-used-by-deaf-people-in-Canada ...yay, it's primarily ASL there, too, except for francophones in Quebec. I had originally thought only the US and France used ASL. Good to know! :D

The answer did say there are some in the maritimes who use a different one, but that it's dying out in favor of ASL.

I appreciate your recommendation of blockbrothers as witnesses! :)

My Mom worked with severely handicapped people for many years and we learned a lot of signs thanks to her sharing her knowledge with us. I've lost a lot of it, but still retained most of the alphabet. Was teaching it to the little guys last year, and then stopped. Looking forward to getting back into it.

This was the girl we were watching. YOu will just die from her cuteness. "Yeah, Like this!"

Also, I can't get the vid to load still, I'll keep trying but maybe slip it onto youtube tonight for dear ol Lynds if it doesn't work for me by then. I'll keep you posted. <3

Oh no, do let me know. <3 Dear ol' Lynds. ^_^

Still no go :(

Put it on Facebook for you! <3

Awesome. My daughter is a teacher and learned sign several years ago. She has often worked with autistic and special needs children in the classroom. I will show her this when I get a chance. Great job.

100% UV RS.. awesome job

Thanks! ^_^

What a great thing to learn. I bet those patients felt so much better with you then having to read and write responses. Way to go
