It's All About Learning --Enroute Your Legend #7

The journey to your personal legend is all about one thing, and one thing only –learning. In fact, the journey itself is, in its essence, merely a process of continuous learning, and ends only when you have learnt the lessons your legend needs from you.

What a simple, yet complicated concept!

The truth is, although we speak constantly of ‘achieving’, our personal legends are not about that at all. Our personal legends are about picking up new information to continuously guide us along the right path, and making constant course corrections when we fall into error. And just like in every teaching experience, at its end, we will be tested rigorously.

Santiago the simple shepherd boy and protagonist of our book, ‘The Alchemist’ by Paulo Coelho understood this instinctively. From the very start, he understood that the lessons he had learnt from his sheep, though he was leaving them for good, were the foundation for his journey to his legend. As he went on and learnt more about the Soul of the World and the Language through which everything speaks, he began to understand further that those were the major lessons of his journey, and was much satisfied by it. At a point, he got to realise that even if he never got to his gold, he had learnt so many things his sheep could never have taught him, and it was these things that kept pushing him forward. Finally, when he learnt to listen to his heart and communicate with the universe itself, he was able to overcome his biggest challenge –the test –and the journey was almost complete.

Everyone, however, learns in different ways along their paths. While Santiago learnt from observation of the world and its peoples, the Englishman got his lessons from his many books. They both tried each other’s method, but couldn’t understand the lessons being taught.

The best thing about the concept of continuous learning is that there are no bad experiences. Whenever things seem to have gone wrong, all we have to do is ask the lesson to be learnt from it, and rest assured that the same error won’t be committed in the future. And when things are good, do the same –ask yourself what you did right, and rest assured that one key to your legend now rests in your hands.
