Get Back Up

It is a struggle not to slip into a vortex of regrets. When I was younger, I wrote poetry through my sadness. It has been awhile since I last allowed myself to write this way.

if my life were a story

if my life were a story
i would not rewrite where i have been
it took every step of every journey
to build this me

instead i'd choose to remember
the good which sprang from every bad
the blood-stains that were proof
of a beating heart

i would choose to remember
my life is the story i make it
getting back up is putting pen to paper
i am the author after all

It felt good to put these words on paper. They are a conscious departure from regret. While I am not celebrating the pain I'm coming through, I am recognizing the strength I can gain from overcoming the darkness I almost gave in to.

It does not matter that I was torn down if I always choose to get back up.

I am strong.

I will keep going.

I am happy to know myself.
