RE: Fighting For Peace: Muhammad Ali (Forgotten Freedom Fighters)

in #freedom7 years ago

Ali is the goat of life. It's important to note that the narrative on Ali did not really shift until he started being able to talk less in his older years. Otherwise, we've never seen an athlete with his conscious or kindness. He would have open trainings so he could greet, autograph and shake all of his fans hands. He did a lot to visit the sick and give attention to the youth.

There's an anecdote I love about Ali in many of his biographys. He trained all his youth to win olympic gold. He told everyone he would do it. When he finally did it, he was at a diner and denied a chance to sit at the counter. IF memory serves me right, they eventually let him sit down but many people were disgusted. They chased him out of town and tried to steal his medal. At that point, Ali realized that even if he was an American hero he was still black and would never truely be accepted or celebrated. He threw the medal and all the false ideas he had chased with it into the river. I love sharing that story because it really helps understand what woke Ali and made him a character bigger than life and boxing.

Thank you for adding this to the conversation. My wife was raised Seventh Day Adventist and when I was doing research for this post she showed me an article by an Adventist that said similar things. His kindness and willingness to talk peacefully about religious matters made many of his local Adventist church assume he had converted. Although he had not, he still attended their church as he continued to seek for peace inside.
