This is a True Story
This is a true story that happened in Maturín, Monagas State, Venezuela. One afternoon I went shopping at the town’s market in my city, joined by my mother and my older sister. This site is very popular in my state, it’s characterized by the large number of sellers, you get a little bit of everything and it’s very crowded. In Venezuela we are currently experiencing an economic crisis that has unleashed crimes on a scale never seen before. Totally out of control. I make this note to give context to what I will develop next.
In the middle of the purchases, my sister gets a call on her cell phone, she has it in vibration mode and well hidden in her crotch for security reasons, since cell phones are very expensive and this is what robbers steal the most.
My sister, very fearful and in a low voice, says to my mother: "Should I attend?" And my mother answers: "If you want it to be stolen, daughter". And, still carrying the purchases, I laugh. Little by little we go deep into the market in an area where there are many children and teenagers who unfortunately live by stealing purses and snatching garments and all kinds of objects that can change for money or drugs. Being in this danger zone the senses are sharpened, getting alert all the time to any suspicious activity. My mom stops to buy some carrots, while she selects them, my sister is called again but this time with more insistence and she says: "Mom, I take it out?"
My mom noticed that in the area there are three of these delinquent children who were very close and does not respond. And my sister insists: "Mommy, should I take it out?" but this time with more exclamation, calling the attention of the delinquents, one of them asks to my mom: "Ma'am, what does she have that she wants to take out?" My mom responds quickly and with evil eyes: "A revolver". And the three, when hearing the answer, were amazed and with fear in his voice, one of them answers: "No! No, ma'am. Don’t take it out.” And they started to runaway from the place. In the fearful distance they saw my mother, making it clear that the innocence of these children shows that their childhood was snatched by an incapable government and an indifferent society.
