Many times when I show up at a studio I have to use borrowed gear, from pedals to amp as I usually bring in my own guitars anyways, my trusty strat is always with me!

Sometimes all you get is a couple pedals and a solid state amp, if you get this scenario try asking to be micro phoned with a ribbon type mic, ideally a Royer R -121 . Even though it is an expensive microphone most studios have one or some sort of cheaper clone , it will make a world of difference ! Adding some saturation plug-in will also help get some harmonic content back, I've gotten really good results using this trick.

Here is a very cool and extremely easy to use plug-in for this: (it's also free! )

Give it a try! let me know what you think :) !

Have you tried the Royer R122V? It's magical on a Vox AC30

Hello @rogerloren ! unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity to even see one of those hahah, they are on the $3000 range ;P ! What are your experiences with it comparing it to the R121?

I haven't worked with the R121 enough to be able to compare the two. But when I used to use the R122V, we used to achieve great sounds for guitars and vocals, instantly.
