THE NEUTRON STAR

in #science7 years ago (edited)

Neutron Stars are known to be celestial object of very small radius formed when giant stars die in supernova explosion combined with gravitational collapse. According to wikipedia, a neutron star is a collapsed core of a giant star that has a total of 10 and 29 solar masses before the occurrence of the collapse. Neutron stars are known to be very small stars, smallest actually and densest stars known mankind as at now because another astronomical discovery might prove wrong later. Like I said earlier they have a very small radius but their mass is atleast 1.4 times the mass of the sun. Neutron stars are known to have a radius of about 10kilometers equivalent to 6.2miles. According to google, neutron stars are so dense that even a teaspoon would weigh a billion tons. Pauli's exclusion principle describes the support offered to the neutron star to prevent continuous collapse and this support is offered by the neutron degenracy pressure Like I earlier said, giant stars usually have between 10 and 29 solar masses before collapse, so if after the collapse, there are still above 3 solar masses, the collapsing continues until a black hole is formed. Black hole??

What is a black hole?

A black hole is a region of space endowed with so much great gravitational field powerful enough to restrict anything even light and particles from escaping. From this, you might deduce that a black hole is a dark hole that prevents anything from exiting it so that means it is always black and having so great an amount of energy to restrict even radiations with high penetrating power.

Types of Neutron Stars

There are 3 types of neutron stars I could find. Well, if you think or know they are more than that, you can drop your idea in the comment box and it can be integrated after proper research. Let's get going:

1 Radio Pulsars

Pulsars are neutron stars that mostly look like flickering stars when looked upon from earth. According to Space, pulsar were discovered in 1967 and now they are used to measure cosmic distances, study extreme state of matter and also search for planets beyond our solar system.

2 X-ray Pulsars

This is also called accretion powered pulsar. They have a magnetized neutron star in their orbit.

X-ray pulsars or accretion-powered pulsars are a class of astronomical objects that are X-ray sources displaying strict periodic variations in X-ray intensity. The X-ray periods range from as little as a fraction of a second to as much as several minutes. Wiki

3 Magnetars

Magnetars have a mass 2-3 times greater than that of the sun and they have an extremely powerful magnetic field . Magnetars differ from other neutron stars by having stronger magnetic fields and a lower rotation speed compared to the others. Magnetars complete a rotation in one to ten seconds while it takes others less than a second to complete a rotation. Another thing is that the magnetar has a very short active life.More Info

Formation of Neutron Stars

Formation of Neutron Star [Credits](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neutron_star)

Any giant star that has a mass 8times greater than that of the sun has the ability to produce a neutron star after a supernova explosion. There is a subsequent nuclear burning of the shell that produces an iron rich core as the the star evolves away from the Main sequence. This iron rich core uses nuclear fuels and must be supported by the degenracy pressure once the fuels are exhausted. The core exceeds the Chandrasekhar limit due to further deposits of the shell burning. Once this limit is exceeded, the electron degeneracy pressure is exceeded too and what next? The core collapses giving rise to the ** Neutron star ** Source

Properties of Neutron Stars

The neutron stars have four basic properties namely:

  • They have a very strong gravity.

  • They have a very small radius.

  • They have a very high density.

  • They have a mass greater than that of the sun with about 1.4 times.
