Wade: The new bonsai tree

in #bonsai8 years ago (edited)

So, I lost two bonsai trees this year due to the winter and personal care. Bonsai trees are pretty easy to maintain once you do a little research. Ive been doing Bonsai for 5 years now. Im still learning.

I hate Wal-mart as much as the next person. However, you can and will save depending on where you live. I go to the garden section sometimes to rescue plants. I saw Wade, poor dude looked depressed so I bought him for $12.99. I nursed Wade for two weeks and I saw improvement.

Before

Wade is back to normal in this picture. A plant that needed some love when I found him. This is 2 weeks after buying Wade. I did some fertillizer and light treatment when I got Wade... It was a daily process checking. Today it was important to transfer Wade into a bonsai pot. The pot is about 3" deep. I threw some bonsai mix and wired into the pot.

After

It took about 3 hours to transfer, trim and wire. I think Wade will be good. A bonsai can stress over a transfer. I decided to trim and loosely wire. I put a lot of the wiring around the base. This way gravity and tension work together in forming the tree. I like the way I sculpted the tree. The front is pictured here.

Thanks for looking.

Good job! I hope you continue to post more bonsai posts. I'm always looking to support more people willing to share their work with this artform, especially when it is authentic and genuine like this. Learn from small mistakes with devastating consequences, take some big risks for small gains, enjoy the unexpected rewards, gain wisdom.

Nice tree. Try using wire on the branches itself instead putting branches down. You can get better results by wrapping wire around the branches and then bending it. By doing this your tree will holds the desired position better as branches will go back up after you remove the gravity wires (guy wires).

I decided to keep it loose for a couple weeks. It will pre form a little. Then I will be properly wiring with a heavier gauge. I get worried about spiraling in the branches as I tend to keep wires in to long in some cases. Thanks again for the tip! I will update Wades progress.

All good. In summer Ficus trees growths at their peek. So I would remove wire after 3 weeks depending on the growth of the tree. Otherwise just check the tree for swelling around the wire. If there is scares just leave the tree for a few months with out rewiring and let it grow wild and it should grow out.

Very nice, I got a Green, Mini Japanese Maple this year I will start to train soon! Keep us posted on how this goes. Should be interesting.

I been wanting a maple forever! Next tree I get. Its a bummer to lose a tree you put work into but its also a learning process. I will do updates on Wade for sure.
