RE: Are You Out Of Your Mind?

Something for you to enjoy. (•ิ‿•ิ)
My stepson's grade 4 debate speech about "letters," shortened and translated.

Divan: Grade 4 - LETTERS

Emojis are today's letters!

(Takes out cell phone) Oh, what emoji will I send mom now. She is so oversensitive - if I send a waving hand she thinks I don't want to talk anymore, if I send a smile she might think I think she's funny. Choices, choices!
Wait let me see - I have 200 emojis on my phone - and that's not enough to quickly type and let you know how I really feel. (Put cell phone away).

Chairman, ladies and gentlemen, Emojis are today's letters!
Emojis have seen a meteoric rise in recent years. So bad that the language experts are now fighting over whether it should even be recognized as a language or not.
I'm sure if you talk to any teenager they will all agree: Emojis are more than symbols, emojis are ME my letters, my language!

I can already hear my Afrikaans teacher asking the following questions: "Where is the verb? And adjective? And no sentence can be without a noun! No what! These emojis cannot be letters of a language. It's just a bunch of meaningless symbols!”

I beg to differ. I can very easily show my best friend with an emoji how great I think my new video game is, or show my mom how angry I am because she's late again? I can speak full sentences with just the help of a few emojis.
Emojis are more than a symbol, they are letters to our new alphabet!

“Bonjour, Savva? Kampei!!” Did you understand me? But wait, I'm sure I can quickly explain what I wanted to say with an emoji.

I understand that emoji is obviously not French or English, but that doesn't stop us from using it as a 'visual letter'.

I will suffice with this: Emojis have a recognized word status. The saying goes: A picture speaks a thousand words. Emojis speak even more!
It's no longer just a symbol, it's letters that form words that are a language on their own!

(Takes out cell phone) Aa! A message from mom. Wait – it's emojis! A watch, a car, a crying face, and a little man waiting! Oo – I understand. She's sorry she's late - but she's on her way and will be here now, I just have to wait!

Emojis are letters that make words with gestures, with pictures - and with one picture you can make a sentence with a verb and a noun!
Emojis are the language of today and the grammar of tomorrow!

Emojis are the letters of my language!

Sort:

They are actually symbols that can represent sentences in few line, but at times i find it very difficult to locate the right emoji since they are voluminous.
Facebook will be boring without emojis, but sometimes a conversation may seem boring if the whole display is purely emoji, oh how will I feel when a dm hi and you drop 👋, if I move ahead to drop, how are you?, then I see 💃💃💃, it will be obvious you don't want to continue the conversation, so backing off will be the best option, what I am saying in essence is that emoji can only support language, shorten it quicken conversations but cannot stand independently as a language.

Haha! Well said!
I agree, emojis can never replace a lanauge.
It will be so sad if it does.

Definitely 😊

Wow what did I do to read such awesome debate from Divan!

Thank you for the summary and translation. I couldn't help but agree with Divan. Although I would say that emojis do a pretty good job of expressing our emotions, the importance of words is not going to be undermined any time soon. Without words, how would we know what the emoji is trying to tell us? We have to interpret the emoji's information in our brain, and for that, we need words. So, linguists and literature enthusiasts should stop worrying about this and not be intimidated by our beloved emojis. If only they supplement the words and make their effect more pronounced.

PS: I owe you for this one, big time 🙏🏻

Divan said, "I told you so!" Haha!

What worries me is the "sy" and "ty" and "slp" the youth are using these days in their texts.
sy - see you
ty - thank you
slp - sleep

Only they know what it means! 🙈

Oh gosh! Did we not do the same. ROFL Umh..

I will then rather vote for emojis.

PS: Take a look at the following site.

And I thought only my girls were doing this. Then they have the audacity to roll their eyes if we tell them that we don't know the meaning of their slang and abbreviations. Lol. Languages are always evolving and so are humans!
