Day 85: My Top 5 Movies
Day 85! I have been waking up early this week and it’s really getting to me today. My head is starting to hurt, also my arms are still tired for some unusual reason. For today’s post I wanted to do something fun and relaxing. I decided to make a list of my top 5 movies because I have been in a movie mood these past couple of weeks. List are something I try to avoid doing but I figured I would give it a shot and see how you all enjoy it. Let me know if you enjoyed this in the comments below.
#5: WATCHMEN
In a gritty and alternate 1985 the glory days of costumed vigilantes have been brought to a close by a government crackdown, but after one of the masked veterans is brutally murdered an investigation into the killer is initiated. The reunited heroes set out to prevent their own destruction, but in doing so discover a deeper and far more diabolical plot.
I am a huge fan of DC and Watchmen is no exception when it comes to my love for DC. Watchmen is a perfect example of the type of heroes I am intrigued by. I love when heroes walk the fine-line of good and evil. In my books, the perfect hero will find himself dabbling in the dark side to better figure out his true self. The Watchmen is full of these kinds of heroes. This movie also does an amazing job at capturing the dark and eerie atmosphere of the DC universe.
#4 Spirited Away
Chihiro and her parents are moving to a small Japanese town in the countryside, much to Chihiro’s dismay. On the way to their new home, Chihiro’s father makes a wrong turn and drives down a lonely one-lane road which dead-ends in front of a tunnel. Her parents decide to stop the car and explore the area. They go through the tunnel and find an abandoned amusement park on the other side, with its own little town. When her parents see a restaurant with great-smelling food but no staff, they decide to eat and pay later. However, Chihiro refuses to eat and decides to explore the theme park a bit more. She meets a boy named Haku who tells her that Chihiro and her parents are in danger, and they must leave immediately. She runs to the restaurant and finds that her parents have turned into pigs. In addition, the theme park turns out to be a town inhabited by demons, spirits, and evil gods. At the center of the town is a bathhouse where these creatures go to relax. The owner of the bathhouse …
Unlike many of my peers, I didn’t start watching Hayao Miyazaki until I was in my twenties. I was hesitant to watch this movie because it seemed childish and I was certain it would not hold my attention. I was horribly wrong in every sense! This movie was absolutely mind blowing! The story was a captivating adventure through this twisted and trippy world that the main character gets sucked into. Every character you come across feels special, even if you only encounter them only for couple of seconds. If you are a fan of Alice In Wonderland, this movie will surely entertain you.
#3 Ex Machina
Caleb, a 26 year old programmer at the world’s largest internet company, wins a competition to spend a week at a private mountain retreat belonging to Nathan, the reclusive CEO of the company. But when Caleb arrives at the remote location he finds that he will have to participate in a strange and fascinating experiment in which he must interact with the world’s first true artificial intelligence, housed in the body of a beautiful robot girl.
This movie was definitely a sleeper. I didn’t see any trailers or anything of that matter. The only reason I watched this movie was because of the name. By the end of the film I was completely stunned by what I had just witnessed. This is exactly how a thriller should be excuted! This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire duration of the film. The characters were quirky and well thought out, with little to gripe about. If you are in the mood for a Sci-fi thriller with an out of the box concept, I highly recommend Ex Machina.
#2 Once Upon a Time in Mexico
In the third movie of Rodriguez’s “Mariachi” trilogy, a Mexican drug lord pretends to overthrow the Mexican government, and is connected to a corrupt CIA agent who at that time, demands retribution from his worst enemy to carry out the drug lord’s uprising against the government.
I am a huge Johnny Depp fan and to me, this was his best performance. This film is jammed pack with bad-ass action scenes from start to finish. I love how it is an open and close story that leaves you feeling satisfied at the end. I can’t forget to mention the soundtrack! The music is this film is what places it so high on my list. Any movie that features Juno Reactor is a good movie in my books.
#1 The Dark Knight
Set within a year after the events of Batman Begins, Batman, Lieutenant James Gordon, and new district attorney Harvey Dent successfully begin to round up the criminals that plague Gotham City until a mysterious and sadistic criminal mastermind known only as the Joker appears in Gotham, creating a new wave of chaos. Batman’s struggle against the Joker becomes deeply personal, forcing him to “confront everything he believes” and improve his technology to stop him. A love triangle develops between Bruce Wayne, Dent and Rachel Dawes.
Heath Ledger, I think that is all that needs to be said. Mr. Ledger portrayed my all time favorite villain absolutely flawless. We will never see another Joker played that well in this century. Christopher Nolan captured all the best details of Gothem and its inhabitants with near perfection. Every superhero movie should strive to be as perfect as The Dark Knight. If you have not watched this by now, you need to go watch it right this second!
Sorry for this being so late! What is your favorite movie?
