in #wafrica8 years ago

The picture below is a plate of hot soup made with snake meat prepared specially by my friend with the snake we killed yesterday evening while i watched and learned. Yeah, thats right, i didn't dare eat the snake meat but my friends are eating it right now in front of me. Soon i will be telling you how we killed the snake, how the snake was prepared and why didn't dare eat the snake meat.

So about 6pm yesterday, i was urinating just by the bushy road path leading right into my compound when i heard a long rush like something was running in the small bush beside the road. In twinkle of an eye, i saw a big snake called EKE in my local dialect (Igbo Language) chasing a baby bush rat called (EYI) and both ran across the path i was urinating. I ran too.

Not up to a minute, i ran into my friends, told them about the snake and they picked up stones and sticks and went back to the place i saw the snake. The snake actually caught the baby rat, and already coiled up around it trying to squeeze it to death but as it was about swallowing it, a stone landed on the snake and it let the rat go. To cut the long story short, they killed the snake and cut off the neck. There is the picture below.

It was so disgusting watching them prepare the snake that night. They scrapped off the scales, cut it open and remove somethings inside the snake and chopped into smaller pieces and poured them into a bowl of salt water. They said it will be in the bowl till today afternoon to make sure all the blood and other liquids comes out of the meat. Unfortunately by the time i arrived this afternoon, they had already finished preparing the snake soup.

They offered me a plate but i refused it because of some traditional reasons. I come from Anambra state and from Idemili North LGA. The tradition is that the indegines of that area isn't allowed to kill the EKE snake, not to talk of eating it. If an indigene mistakenly kill the snake, you have to bury it like a human being. Though we are not in Anambra but in Enugu, there are stories of Anambra people that have gone mad because they ate the EKE snake in other states.

Aside the traditional reasons, i don't really like snakes cause they are too creepy. But if you see how these guys are eating this meat now, It looks like they are really enjoying it. Its been an interesting afternoon so far. Thanks for reading such a long post and i hope you like it. I will like to know what you think about snake meats.... Do you eat them? Or would you like to have a taste if you have the opportunity? Reply below and don't hesitate to upvote too.
