I'VE SEEN THIS FLY SCARE SO MANY PEOPLE
For some reason, they think it's a bee or hornet.
These Hoverflies are some pretty crazy creatures. Since they have some pretty specific "paintjobs," they do really well "pretending" to be Yellowjackets... or some other type of hornet, bee, or wasp. This one actually landed both on my hand and on my shoe. While I must say that they do look similar to the Yellow Jacket Hornets, their hovering capability is amazing, and makes them fly more like a hummingbird. Here's a few recent photos, so look closely. Knowing how to accurately identify a hoverfly can save you front unnecessarily freaking out. Enjoy the photos folks!

Interesting insect, I have just read that its larva develops in silt at the bottom of reservoirs. For breathing, it regularly rises to the surface of the water and exposes a long breathing tube at the end of the abdomen!
Not sure I have ever seen one here in IL, so thanks for the valuable information!
A handsome dude!! Nature is amazing with the colours and camouflage, no?
