HARVESTING YACON

in #gardening4 years ago

And now for the harvest video!

Last night we finally harvested our first Yacon ever. It was a plant that we had wanted to grow for some time, and after a gift of some to try this planting season from "BobMel simple living" we gave it a go!

The Yacon is a perennial flowering plant that is technically a Daisy. It can grow to heights of over six feet, and producing both rhizomes and tubers beneath the surface. The rhizomes are used to propagation, and the tubers can be eaten, which is what we try at the end of this video. Enjoy!

Glad it worked out. My two plants didn't make it. I heard when they turn sweet they taste like apples. Looser soil might help their growth.

Yeah, our soil was loose, so I'm thinking it was the plants that grew over the top of them. Too bad you lost yours. Better luck next time?

I read that they do better in a less acidic soil. Maybe try growing then away from your tomatoes. Good luck.

I think you harvested those too early :D
But they sure taste better than turnips :P

I had no choice. Soon the ground will freeze and kill even the rhizomes, so I'd have no harvest and none to grow next year.... we'll see what happens next time. Thanks!

Love the learning curves that come with rhizomes & tubers.... they're like a report card of our soil and the environmental balance.
